by Masashi S. JDM Enthusiast

The Mazda RX-7 is a 2-door sports car with three generations from 1978 to 2002. It is a front-mid rotary engine, rear-wheel drive which was released in March 1978 by Mazda. In 1988, the RX-7 convertible was launched with a turbocharged or naturally aspirated engine and offered a removable rigid section over the head as well as a very well-engineered folding rear fabric section with a heat-able rear glass window.

Interior

The RX-7 has a well-designed and comfortable interior with a good driving position, a big steering wheel, and some stitching on the gear knob and handbrake as well as some equipment like a pair of plastic luggage bins, air conditioning, leather upholstery, AM/FM stereo cassette player, powered mirrors, and electric windows.

The instrument clusters are simple and orderly which consist of a speedometer with 180 mph speed, a tachometer that can read up to 9000 rpm, gauges for oil temperature, and oil pressure.

RX-7 (SA)

The first generation of RX-7 SA22C is a rear-wheel-drive equipped with a Wankel engine behind the front axle with two engines: 105 HP and 115 HP. Underneath, it has a Watt linkage with 4-link rear suspension at the rear and a 50/50 weight ratio. It was available in a standard 5-speed manual and an option of 4-speed manual/automatic or 3-speed automatic.

RX-7 (FC)

The FC series was released in 1985 with some minor differences and is considered a much softer sport-tourer, unlike the previous model. To further improve the handling, Mazda equipped an independent rear suspension setup and opted to use rack and pinion.

For the engine, Mazda equipped a fuel-injected 13B-VDEI naturally aspirated engine rated 146 HP and in 1987, introduced a turbocharged model rated 182 HP with 7.0 seconds from 0-100 KPH (0-60 MPH) acceleration time. Engines fitted a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.

RX-7 (FD)

In 1992, the FD Series was unveiled with small ground clearance, curvy layout, and featured a striking design. The total weight was significantly reduced and the gravity was lowered while the power was increased as well as improved the driving dynamics. It came with a 1.3L 13B-REW twin-turbocharged and twin-rotor engine producing 255 HP with 0-100 KPH (0-60 MPH) in 5.0s.

In 1998, the RX-7 Series 8 released the final model with an upgraded intercooler, radiator cooling performance with a new front panel, and fitted with more efficient turbos. Some models have an adjustable rear spoiler and the ABS was improved for cornering precision while braking.

The automatic transmission was fitted to 251 HP, the RB grade produced 261 HP and the high-end grade produced 276 HP. The RS grade has 17-inch wheels and Bilstein suspension, the RZ grade came with BBS wheels and a custom red racing-themed interior.
