Preparation to Welcome Surrogacy Born Child

by Shivani Sachdev Founder & Director

The feeling of holding the little one in their hands for the first time is really a blissful feeling for the parents. But for a couple who is expecting a child through surrogacy, this feeling can be joyful but tense at the same time. Such parents must be prepared in advance before bringing their baby home for the first time.

1.     Emotional Connect

Surrogacy is a long and complex process. In surrogacy, the child is not physically connected to the intended mother throughout the pregnancy. But it is the parent’s responsibility to connect to the child throughout the pregnancy so that the child does not feel uncomfortable later. Dr Shivani Sachdev Gour suggests the following ways to build an emotional connection with the child.

·         Feel excited about the pregnancy, visit the surrogate mother more often to make your baby aware of your presence. A child can sense and feel its surroundings even in the womb.

·         If you cannot meet the surrogate mother continuously, call her, send her voice recordings, and ask her to play it frequently so that the child gets familiar with the parent’s voice.

·         Ask surrogate to maintain a document of your child’s activity and growth so that you can feel connected with him/her.

2.     Prepare for Delivery

Though the intended mother is not going to deliver the baby, but it is her child. Intended parents must be a part of the delivery process and be ready for delivery with all essential items of the newborn.

3.     Bringing the Child to Home

Before bringing the child to the home, make sure to check the following points.

·         If the surrogacy process is being held in some other country, make proper traveling arrangements, and check the legal aspects of both the countries to travel with the newborn.

·         Make sure everyone at home accepts and supports the fact that the child is surrogacy born. A happy environment makes the child more connected to all family members.

·         Be prepared with baby’s all necessity such as clothes, bedding, stroller, and so on.

4.       Breastfeeding the Baby

In surrogacy, the intended mother is not physically giving birth to the child. Thus, breastfeeding is a serious problem. An intended parent must do arrangements for feeding the child before bringing it home. They can opt for any of the following ways.

·         Breastfeed using the surrogate’s breastmilk is the most used method. Request surrogate mother to pump the breast milk and deliver it to your home with proper nursing arrangements till the 6 weeks of baby birth.

·         If the surrogate is out of the country or city, the doctors recommend to the intended mother some hormones to be taken before the child’s birth. This hormone triggers the milk production in her body so that she can breastfeed the child.

5.     Have Patience

Though the advance preparation can help but it may take time to build bonding between parents and surrogate child. One can also take the help of bond-building activities with the child to speed up the process.
