Pregnancy Problems: How Long Should You

by Reggie Moore Professional writer and proto entrepreneur

Starting a family is something that so many people look to as a goal in life. Most people are able to get pregnant with little to no issues. Some are more unfortunate, and this dream just never seems to be attainable. How long should you try to get pregnant before you seek the assistance of medical intervention? That question is can have many different answers depending upon your own personal issues.

Under 35 and Healthy

For those that are under the age of 35 and have no obvious health issues, it is recommended to try for a year without protection, and if nothing happens, then it might be an appropriate time to make an appointment with your doctor. Getting pregnant requires exact timing with so many body functions, so it is important to give it enough time to work on its own.

Over 35 and Healthy

For women over the age of 35, visiting with your doctor if you have not had success after 6 months is an appropriate amount of time. At this age, the woman is considered to be "advanced maternal age." At this age, the ability to conceive starts to decline. Since the egg supply starts to decrease at this time, the appointment might need to be made with a reproductive endocrinologist or fertility specialist.

Over Age 40

If a woman chooses to start trying to conceive at this age, it is important to note that both the quantity and quality of their egg supply are greatly reduced. Seeking the assistance of a reproductive endocrinologist at this point would be good to work with from the beginning of the process. They can guide you and monitor your health so the chances of conceiving and going through the pregnancy without miscarrying can be increased.

What Else Can Affect Success Of Conceiving?

There are other factors that can affect the chances of conceiving. If your body weight and BMI are too high or too low, then there can be complications or infertility issues. Any BMI that falls out of the 18 to 30 range can cause potential problems. Thyroid issues can cause affect conception since your thyroid regulates hormones, and obviously, hormones are very important in conception and pregnancy. Some women also have issues that they are aware of that can cause problems with conception. These may include endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome. Both conditions have a very negative impact on both the conception and success of a pregnancy. When any of these issues are in play, it is helpful to have a doctor advising you and working with you from the very start of the process. Consider also taking a PCOS type quiz.

So many things have to go correctly in order for a pregnancy to happen. There are numerous issues that cause obstacles. It is important to relax and take care of your health, both mentally and physically, during the process of trying to conceive. Just remember that medical professionals are there to help you if are not having any success.
