History Of Pratapgad Fort

Pratapgad Fort is surrounded by mountains and deep valleys nearby Mahabaleshwar. it's Honour, prestige and pride have survived since the time of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Afzal Khan met. After Meeting, Afzal Khan was very impressed with Shivaji Maharaj's personality and extended his hand for friendship towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj but after getting the opportunity, he attacked upon Shivaji from behind. He had no injury due to iron armor inside the clothes. In response, Shivaji Maharaj hit back upon Afzal Khan through the baghnakh which he wore in his hand and cut off the stomach of Afzal Khan.

Fort Formation

Pratapgad Fort is a symbol of Shivaji's valor. There was a second fort too inside the fort. It is divided into two parts, its lower fort is 320 meters long and 110 meters wide, while the upper fort is 180 meters long. Upper fort have a Mahadev's temple. A large court was organized in front of the temple. So that no one couldn't lie by sitting in front of the temple.

Bhavani Temple

It is believed that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had established this temple in 1661. The temple has 50 feet long, 30 feet wide and 12 feet high pillars. To enter the temple, you have to go through the Nagada Hall, where a big drum is kept, you can hear the noice of this drum only on special occasions. You can see here the spears and other type of weapon used by Maratha soldiers. The idol of Goddess Bhavani in sari having eight hands is situated inside the temple. The sword of Chhatrapati Shivaji is also kept in the temple. He killed 600 soldiers of Afzal Khan's army in the battle of Pratapgarh by this sword alone.

Hanuman Temple

Guru Ramdas Swami of Shivaji Maharaj had established this temple here. It is a special thing of the temple that this form of God Hanuman ji did not get to see anywhere else.

Distance from Mumbai is around 208 km. Pratapgarh is far away about 24km from Mahabaleshwar. It will be good to go there during the day. Facility of buse services from Panvel to Poladpur is also available. You have to stop in Poladpur after that you have to reach the Wada village, from where you can easily reach the fort by booking a car.
