Placed in Dream College Waitlist? 3 Mistakes to Avoid Waiting for Admission
The class XII board results will soon be out. In fact, some of your results are already out. What's next? It's time to enter a new chapter of life, college!
Moving from high school to college is a significant transition for the students. I am sure, you have several plans for college.
To be admitted to college, you need to cross another hurdle, get your application accepted. After you send in the application, you know that there are provisions for two things.
• You get the admission
• Your application gets rejected.
Have you ever thought there can be another possibility? You may be placed on the waiting list. Finding your name on the waiting list is pretty frustrating. It's better to be accepted or rejected, since, in that case, you know where exactly you stand. You don't have any idea of that if your name is on the waiting list.
Here are a few mistakes you need to avoid if you find your name on the waiting list of your dream college.
Limit College Options
No doubt, it's wonderful to have a top college in mind but if you are advancing with just one institution in focus, this is probably not the best way. Always remember that the way you study and your grades are of much more value than the brand name that is the college you are joining.
As pointed out by the Dean of a well-known college, "Apply to colleges that you love, not because of their names or rankings or locations, but because they promote the learning and living culture that will challenge you, change you, delight you, and ultimately let you become yourself fully. The admissions decision is as much a journey of the head as it is the heart-let both organs speak to you and then translate what they say into your application."
Never allow being waitlisted in your dream college to stall your plans of further study. We know that you are confident of getting admission, but remember that no one can certify that. It is thus always advisable to have a plan B.
Pester the Admission Counselors
Make sure you are not harassing the academic counselors. That will never help your situation. If you keep on calling or showing up at the admission office, you will never be able to better your chances, but on the contrary, ruin them. Always remember that the admission counselors are quite busy with their work and if you keep on disturbing them, they are bound to get irritated, if not annoyed.
Make sure you are not pestering the admission office by sending them emails continually or making your parents and others calling them every day. However, you can certainly give them a call periodically to find out your status on the waiting list. Make sure not to question them on the reason they have put you on the waitlist.
Not Having a Preference List
In case of regular admission, you will get a few weeks to determine which college should you join; you can weigh the things that you like about a given college and whether it would allow you to study your preferred subjects before you take the decision. You will not get so much time in case you are on the waitlist.
Try listing the names of the colleges you have been waitlisted in according to priority. This will help you to take the decision faster.
Don't panic or give up hope. Being waitlisted is not exactly denial. However, there are high chances to meet with denial eventually.
We know that it is really hard to move on in case your dream college waitlists you since you always tend to think 'what if' I get the much-awaited call right after I join another college? It is advisable to get admitted in the college that accepts you. The Dean of admissions at Yale, Jeffrey Brenzel points out, "Once your letter is off to the school, focus with all your heart on making your best choice among the places you have been admitted". He further added, "Treat the wait-list school as a wild card, something to be addressed if and when it gets dealt."
