Photographing Families – 7 Best Poses To Consider

by Alan Maudie Photography Photographer

Family photography is an excellent way to treasure beautiful moments with the people you love. However, during a photo shoot, family portrait poses are one critical variable.

We discussed with one of the most dependable family photographers in Calgary, and here is what he had to say about the best family photography poses.

Hand in hand walk:
This is a great family portrait pose, to begin with. In this pose, the parents are holding onto their kids’ hands. Also, the family strolls naturally.

Encourage them to walk naturally so that you can capture beautiful moments of real family love.

Goof around:
Encourage the group to play around to capture some stunning family photos. A fun trick to try with toddlers is to make them pass under the legs of the parents.

You’ll get the chance to capture some cute smiles & the pictures will be dynamic. This is an excellent chance to get the kids, and even the whole family smiling.

Sit down family portrait poses:
This is a great way to get the whole family comfortable in front of the camera.

You should kneel to take pictures at eye level with the family. One of the best things about this pose is that you can be at eye level with both the parents & the kids.

Get the entire family to sit close, so they can hold each other’s hand. Ensure that they don’t have significant gaps between them as this might give a feeling of detachment.

Baby lift:
This is one of those classics, and iconic family portrait poses that you always want to cover.
However, it would help if you were very careful with this pose as you don’t wish the child to fall or get sick.

Hug them:
For parents, hugging their kid is so natural that they don’t need too many instructions.

Kiss the baby:
This picture is a must when it comes to family portraits with kids. Most likely, the parents will kiss their kid even if you don’t train them.

Lay down:
Family photography poses work best when the whole family is connected, and having them laying down is just one example.

Conclusion:
Whenever you are undertaking a family photography project, encourage the members to be active. Have them stroll around, hug, kiss and play. This will offer you plenty of opportunities to capture some lovely candid moments that look genuine.
