Personal Care Tips for Dementia Patients

by Eoin Morgan lauriem

Living with a patient with dementia can take a toll on your personal life as well. If any of your loved one is diagnosed with the condition, and he or she is living with you, then it is essential to understand the condition. You cannot take care of the patient without understanding its diseases or his mental status. You should be considerate towards them especially if they are unable to retain their memory. When a person suffers from dementia, his mental ability to retain memory or to remember anything that has occurred in their life just vanishes from their mind.

Initially they will just begin with forgetting places, names or faces however, with the increasing impact of the mental condition, they will even lose their ability to judge situations or reason them like a normal human being. During this time, they need Special Personal Care Services to take care of them and be with them throughout the day. In case you have certain professional obligations and you need to work in order to pay for the bills, the personal care provider can help you a lot.

The care provider will stay with the patient throughout the day making sure that he takes his medication on time, food on time and attends all the medical visits for better assessment. However, you need to follow certain care tips along with long-term home care to make sure that the patient is perfectly fine and follows you well:

·         Conversation: you have to be confident while talking to them; do not create a sad and doubtful mood. They might not be able to judge things better, but their mental status can detect such things well. While talking to them keep things straight. They are unable to reason or judge between complicated things so you should talk to them in simple and easy language. Do not speak fast, or too slow just keep it normal.

·         Limit distractions: people suffering from dementia do not like noises or loud sounds. Hence, while conversing with them or around them, you should limit these distractions, which might affect their behavior.

·         Be gentle: dementia patients do not like to be screamed on or shouted on; hence, you should keep your voice down with them. Even if they have done something wrong like broken something or forgot something, you should try to convey the message gently.

You should ask the personal care services as well as the person taking care of the patient to follow all these things. Apart from this, make sure that the caregiver assigned by the services is trained and experienced in taking care of the dementia patient for better care.
