PCBs and the Electronics Industry in Texas

by Alex Barker Content Wirter
Texas, like the rest of the US is incredibly diverse when it comes to the workforce and its manufacturing industry. And just like any other state in the US, it too contributes significantly to the country’s GDP with a wide variety of imports and exports.

In 2012, the state of Texas was ranked number one for electronic exports which altogether valued at $42.4 billion, and was ranked number two in electronics employment. The state has had an incredibly high export value and it has been on top of this winning streak for the past eleven years.

The electronics industry of Texas introduced itself on the global scene in 1950s. The foundation for this industry was laid with a few scientists in Austin and it slowly grew to encompass the entire state. Houston became the home base for most electronics firms by mid 50s. At that time most of the electronic work was concentrated on automation systems and geophysical instruments. Dallas-Fort Worth areas were second in this race to be the biggest center of electronics in Texas.

Integrated Circuits

During the late 1950s, many high tech companies were established in Texas with the most prominent of them being Texas Instruments. An engineer from this very company, by the name of Jack Kilby, was responsible for inventing the Integrated circuit in 1958. Jack Kilby went on to win the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work in 2000, but at that time, because of Integrated Circuits, Texas Instruments achieved great success. This very invention led on to pave the way for semiconductors, telecommunications, computers and all computer related services.

What Made Texas Ideal for Electronics Manufacturing and Design?

Texas provided the ideal environment for electronics design and manufacturing firms. Other favorable factors included:

  • Diverse Industry
  • Highly Skilled Workforce
  • Low Tax Demands
  • Close Proximity to National and International Markets
  • Growing Consumer Market
  • Business Friendly Environment
  • Research Conducting Universities
  • History of Technological Innovation
  • Great Living Environment for Families

It is also worth mentioning that the populace of Texas is significantly more specialized in electronics manufacturing than any other state in the US. About 30% to 40% workers in Texas are employed in telecom manufacturing, semiconductors, and computers.

With such a varied spectrum of electronics manufacturing and design industry, Texas is the ideal place for the manufacture and assembly of Printed Circuit Boards.
