George Gallego thanks his group (in yellow) and some of his supporters (counting his wife Julia; the fellow benefactor of Wheels of Progress, Ro Murray; and Jose Hernandez) after he finished the initial two legs of a 3-section race. The 2.4-mile swim segment of the tiresome IronMan race took a simple 54 minutes, only 7 minutes behind the first class non-impaired competitors. The 112-mile bicycle part was considerably more hazardous. George Gallego's handcycle fizzled not once but rather twice. The brake link couldn't withstand the high RPMs and snapped on mile 45 and after that again on mile 90. Months of preparing did not plague this Para-long distance runner, but rather the disappointment of his handcycle gear kept his achieving his objective. George Gallego’s twin daughters, who both graduated from Brown University, are in medical school at present and the above photo was taken in 2015 when they met to catch up with one another in person.
