Palm Oil Processing and Its Applications

by Vinay S. Writing stroy
Palm Oils are generally vegetable oil extracted from the mesocarp of the palm oil tree. It contains fatty acids mixed with esterified glycerol. Palm oil is rich in Palmitic acid, the 16-carbon saturated fatty acid, monounsaturated oleic acid, and vitamins. Crude Palm Oil is rich in alpha-carotenes, beta-carotene, and lycopene after being refined and bleached its carotenes are exponentially reduced to traces.

History: The history of Palm oil dates back to 5 thousand years ago, as it was founded by a group of archaeologists in a tomb Abydos of Egypt. Palm oil has been identified as cooking oil in the west and central African countries. In the Colonial Era, Europeans and Englishmen used to buy palm oil from Africa.

Palm Oil Production: Crude Palm oil is reddish in color. It is majorly grown in the regions of Indonesia, which is the largest producer of palm oil which exports 60% of the world’s palm oil export up to 51.8 metric tons followed by Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Columbia, Ecuador, Kenya, Ghana, and Cameroon. The total production of Palm oil in the year 2019 is 73.5 million tonnes while India and China are the world’s largest Palm oil importers.

Palm Oil Processing: The palm oil extracted from trees is first bleached, deodorized, and then refined due to which it is called RBD crude Palm Oil free from carotenoids. After milling, the crude material passes through the refining process. Palm oil goes through a separating process in which a certain part of it is separated during a phase transition through crystallization to obtain solid palm stearin and liquid olein fractions. Then, melting and degumming are performed to remove impurities. Physical refining removes the coloration and smell to produce RBDO palm oil and free fatty acids. RBDO palm oil has application in the washing powder and soap industry.

Types of Palm Oil: The two basic types of palm oil are:-

• Red Palm Oil: Red palm oil is extracted from the palm fruit. It contains 50% saturated fat—considerably less than palm kernel oil—and 10% polyunsaturated fat and 40% polyunsaturated fat. The presence of Red color shows the abundance of carotene content in the oil. It also contains 50% medium fatty acids and few nutrients like Sterols, Vitamin E, and carotenoids.

• White Palm Oil: White palm oil is the product of the refining process. It losses the red color after the various process. It is the general palm oil sold in the market having properties to replace hydrogenated fats while baking or frying.

Applications of Palm Oil:

• It has anti-microbial properties that could be applied to wounds.
• Palm oil has its applications in the soap and detergent industry.
• Palm oil saves from hydrogenated fats.
• It has been used as cooking oil for ages in Brazil, Indonesia, Africa, and South-Asia.
• Palm oil blends with Mayonnaise and other vegetable oil.
• It is also used in animal feeds as a milk substitute to feed calves.
• Palm oil produces bio-diesel and methyl ester. It is often blended with other forms of diesel to produce Bio-diesel.
• The waste material received after refining could be converted into pellets used as bio-fuel.

Palm oil has created a positive impact in oil markets especially in Asian markets with its wide applications ranging from cooking oil to prime material used in the soap industry and Bio-fuel. The palm oil is first bleached, deodorized, and then refined that produces Palm stearin and olein as a by-product. It is widely grown in Indonesia and imported in India.
