This article discusses the common used steps to overcome one’s fear of flying and explains such steps in detail.

Most people are not aware that the fear of flying is called aerophobia or aviophobia. Different people have different reasons as to why they are afraid of flying. However, in the world today one of the most common ways for people to get from one continent to the next or from one part of a country or area to the next is by air. There are even some countries or areas that rely solely on aircrafts for people to get to work; this is due to there being no other way to access such areas. One such example is of the state of Alaska, U. S. A. which heavy relies on aircrafts to transport people and this is the most common mode of transport in the state.

That being said, this does not negate the fact that there are a number of people who have a fear of flying. And as a result there is a lot of literature on overcoming the fear of flying, designed to assist people who have aerophobia. While this article is not a medical journal nor is it posing as a medical health advice provider, it is designed to share some of the common steps used and referred to when one is working toward overcoming their fear of flying.

Some of steps to overcoming fear of flying are:

Latch on to triggers that set you off – by this one needs to figure out what frightens them and examine how their anxiety reaction is triggered. The goal is to manage one’s fears when the anxiety levels are low; therefore by learning what sets one off it becomes easier to turn it off.

Step onto the airplane with knowledge – a common aspect that fuels anxiety is fear of the unknown, however, once you gain knowledge then the ‘what ifs’ are limited by the facts. Therefore, familiarize yourself with the facts, while these may not rid you of your anxiety they will help you manage it.

Anticipate your anxiety – anxiety which one anticipates before the actual fearful ordeal takes place is called anticipatory anxiety. It is far more intense than the actual anxiety of the thing one fears. It must be known that this anticipatory anxiety is not an accurate predictor of how you will feel on the flight.

Separate fear from danger – the body reacts in the exact same way for both anxiety and danger. The key here is to remind yourself that anxiety does not actually mean that you are in danger. Tell yourself that anxiety makes your frightening thoughts feel more likely to happen and that this is not actual danger that is happening.

Recognise that common sense makes no sense – anxiety tricks common sense by making you think that you are in danger, when you are perfectly safe. Also to outsmart anxiety as a rule do the opposite of what your gut tells you and embrace the discomfort that comes with it.
