IS OPEL NOW IN THE SAME TROUBLE BAG AS VW?

A new Emissions scandal may be brewing in Europe. According to Reuters OPEL (under GM) will have to go through a new extensive testing regarding the Zafira Minivan, because it has been stated that it is violating European pollution standards.  This comes after “Green” activists’ claims that the Zafira Minivan has excessive NOx (Mono-Nitrogen Oxide) emissions.

NOx is a heavy atmosphere pollutant produced during combustion at high temperatures and does form part of acid rain.

During tests performed by the University of Applied Sciences in Bern, Switzerland, it was found that a Zafira Minivan had produced NOx emissions as much as 17 times higher than the Euro-6 system limit. The gyst of the problem arouse when it was found out that the Zafira had met the Euro-6 limit when the bench tests were performed with only two wheels running.  However, when tests were run on benches with the 4 wheels running, the NOx produced far exceeded the limit of the Euro-6 by a factor of 2 to 4, according to the DUH (Germany’s Environmental Lobby Group).

OPEL has branded as “false and unfounded” the results published.  However, according to DUH there is actually no “technically plausible explanation” for the wide emissions difference in the tests.  DUH has proceeded to hand over the testing results to the KBA, the German Motor Transport Authority, and has requested to re-test the vehicle urgently.

OPEL and GM have strongly stated that they have not developed any type of software that would detect whether a vehicle is taking part of an exhaust emissions test.

Only some time and an official Re-test will provide a real answer.
