Old Versus New Video Games
As a child i spent literally hundreds of hours of my old NES, and later on SNES, systems bashing the buttons trying to get past the next level or difficult boss and complete the latest video game or beat the highest score. My interest in video games first started when we had an old Amstrad CPC 464 home computer for a Christmas or a birthday present and i never looked back. Every week i would buy the latest video games magazines and salivate over the amazing new graphics and games inside and could not wait for pocket money or birthdays to come around so i could get my fix of the hottest 8 bit action around. My favourite game series was probably Super Mario Brothers as i was a big Nintendo fan and much preferred them to the Sega alternatives of the day, although i would still enjoy playing those too at friends houses on the weekends. My love for gaming has never really gone away and although i don't have the amount of time i used to as a child to play i still enjoy getting the control pad out on my most recent system and have a good old session on my current favourites.
Watching how the gaming systems of the day developed was a constant excitement in my school days. Watching as the graphics sounds and gameplay became bigger, brighter and more realistic. I watched the introduction of the SNES system and remember distinctly thinking how amazing the graphics looked on Super Mario World at the time. Those graphics pale in comparison to todays Hi Def, 4K gaming machines like the XBOX One and Playstation 4, but in there day they wowed us just as todays generation of kids are by the new machines.
Liberty Games, a pinball company based in the UK, recently came up with this wonderful article comparing some of the most iconic game series of all time. It shows games like Super Mario, Mortal Kombat, Sonic and Resident evil and compares there first incarnation with the most recent in the series. I found the piece incredibly enjoyable and like a trip down memory lane watching some of the videos of the older games.
This lead me to ponder which do i prefer, the Old or New incarnations of some of the classics? Whilst the modern games undoubtedly look and feel much better, the simple classic gameplay of the originals is hard to beat and has lead to a massive surge in retro gaming popularity these days. In my opinion, good as the new games and systems are, you can't beat the good old classic games like Super Mario Brothers on the NES.
