Obesity & Related Health Risks

by Manya Verma Health care and lifestyle

Obesity has been proven as a high-risk factor for many physical and emotional health issues. A hospital specializing in weight loss surgery in Delhi lists the following common health risks of overweight and obesity:

1.    Type 2 diabetes

It occurs when blood glucose level is too high. As per the statistics from best hospital for gastroenterology 80% of the patients with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese. If not taken seriously, their chances for problems such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, eye problems, nerve damage, and other health problems increases.

A cardiac surgeon in Gurgaon recommends overweight patients to lose 5 to 7 percent of body weight and get regular physical activity to delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

2.    High blood pressure

High blood pressure or hypertension makes blood flow through blood vessels with a beyond normal force. This can strain the heart, damage blood vessels, and raise the risk of heart attack, stroke and kidney disease.

3.    Heart disease

Heart disease includes all conditions that affect the heart including heart attack, heart failure, sudden cardiac death, or an abnormal heart rhythm. Hypertension, high levels of blood fat (also called blood lipids) and blood glucose raises the risk of these conditions.

Specialists from heart hospital Patna have observed that losing 10 % of weight lowers risk factors for developing heart disease and improves blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood flow.

4.    Stroke

During a stroke the blood supply to brain is suddenly cut off leading to brain damage and this can be caused by a blockage or the bursting of a blood vessel in brain or neck. High blood pressure is observed to be the leading cause of strokes at hospitals in Gurgaon.

5.    Sleep apnea

It is a common disorder in which a person does not breathe regularly while sleeping. However, if untreated it may raise the risk of health problems such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

6.    Metabolic syndrome

It is a group of conditions that increases the risk of heart diseases, diabetes, and stroke. These conditions include:

·       high blood pressure

·       high blood glucose levels

·       high triglyceride levels

·       low levels of HDL cholesterol

·       Excess fat around waist

7.    Fatty liver diseases

It is a condition in which fat builds up in the liver and may lead to severe liver damage, cirrhosis, or even liver failure.

8.    Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a painful and chronic health problem that causes reduced motion in joints. Obesity increases the risk of getting osteoarthritis by putting extra pressure on joints and cartilage.

9.    Gallbladder diseases

This includes problems such as gallstones and cholecystitis which may form if bile contains too much cholesterol.

10.                       Some forms of Cancer

As per a famous oncologist in Patna, some forms of cancer are associated with obesity and hence, weight loss and regular exercise coupled with balanced diet is advised.

Other than the above physical problems overweight and obesity are also associated with mental health problems such as depression from weight bias and stigma leading to feelings of rejection, or shame.
