Nursing Guide For How To Stay Active In Night Shifts

Our body has an internal clock which regulates our daily activities such as sleeping and staying awake. Knowledge of this clock is very necessary for nursing students or nurses as they have to stay awake during their night shifts. This knowledge will help them to adjust their clock according to their duty times efficiently. Nursing assignments largely depend upon the efficient management of time during the night shifts.

There is no fixed duty time for a nurse. At some point in time, they have to work in night shifts too. This can be regular or during emergency time also. When a person is new in the job, there is a curiosity also to work on different assignments to learn new things quickly. So some people take night shifts also along with their daily duties. The nurses doing night shifts are paid better for their shifts. No doubt, it is tiresome but once you receive the paycheck, all tiredness is gone.

Here are some tips to adjust yourself for your night shifts. This adjustment is assuming your night shift to be from 7 pm to 7 am. Try to take a nap of 2-3 hours before you leave for work. This will keep you active during the duty. If you feel drowsy getup and walk along the wards. Try to have a flight of steps which will make you more active. After the shift, try to go to sleep as soon as possible on reaching home. Don’t try for the gym or the daily chores. After a nap of 5-6 hours, you will feel relaxed and ready for your daily activities. You can repeat this cycle till your duty time changes. You can adjust these activities according to the new timings.

Some people cannot sleep during the day due to non-adjustment of their biological clock. But as they are on night shifts, they have to sleep during the day or they will get ill. So, some tips are there to sleep during the day. Try to make your room as dark and as quiet as possible. Make sure that nobody disturbs you until it is very urgent. Switch your phone to silent mode. Some people gain weight due to irregular eating habits so try to eat healthy and right. Try to beat gym if you can’t manage it at your convenient timings.
