No Basement? No problem! 4 Workarounds for Basement-Less California Homes
by Kristen White Blogger If you are a home buyer looking to live in California, you might be shocked that there aren’t as many homes for sale with basements as you would like there to be. In northeast United States, basements are very common as they add square footage to a home without making it bigger and can reduce heating and cooling costs. The reason why much of the western region never caught on to basements remains a mystery, but with spacious Newport Beach homes for sale all the time, homeowners do not seem like they are missing out.
Buy a home with an extra room
When searching for vacant homes in California, consider all the rooms you want. How many bedrooms? How many bathrooms? Do you also want a living room and dining room? With all the rooms you want in a home, look for homes that have that one extra room that can serve as a storage room.
Use your garage as a place for storage
Garages are much like basements; They’re dark, they’re cool, they’re protected by concrete, and they can do a great job storing items without much problem. If you or your family only has one car, consider getting a two-car garage where the other half can be used to store belongings. Alternatively, you can get a home with a multi-car garage and use the extra space not occupied by cars for storage. With the space you have in your garage, buy some storage racks so you can properly organize your stuff.
The only thing you would have to worry about by using your garage as a storage room are animals, especially insects like spiders. So long as your belongings are in tightly shut containers and closed boxes, however, they should be perfectly preserved.
Store Your Items in Creative Ways
With your new California home, you can also make use of every square inch you have. This includes closets, under the stairs, under the bed, behind doors, and more. For boxes of belongings that include china sets, decorations, toys, and more, you can buy smaller storage racks to fit inside these spaces. If you are getting a larger home than what you currently live in, you would be surprised at how much you can store in areas that you wouldn’t typically pay attention to.
Adding a basement to a home is possible, but it would be to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars. We only recommend going this direction with a new home is if you are very attached to the home, buy want an absolutely need a basement for multiple reasons.
If you are in love with a California home for sale, but are turned off by the lack of a basement, there are many ways in which you can store your belongings. More often than not, it doesn’t ruin the mood for homeowners.
