Nine Yard Sarees

Named as “Nauvari” in Maharashtra and “Madisar” in the Tamilian Brahmin community, the Nine yard saree is longer in length than the normal sarees of India.While other sarees are six yards, these sarees are nine yards in length as these are worn in a different style. These sarees are draped in such a way so as to give a trouser-dress like appearance.  With one of the folds pulled through between the legs and tucked into the back on the belt, the style fulfils the requirements of modesty and protection.The trouser-like style also made it easy for the women to work and move around in. Nine yard sarees were traditionally worn by women warriors of India and by the bride in Tamil Brahmin community. The Nine yard saree has been a part of Indian history. Women of rural India often wore this style of saree as it provided great ease and comfort while working. Even today it is worn by the women some communities who have stuck to their old traditions. It is worn in such a unique way that also makes the enhances the beauty of women in a certain way.
