Newborn Photography – A Blend of Cuteness and Creativity

by Darren Curtis D S Curtis Photography

Babies are undoubtedly the cutest gifts to the mankind. But capturing a posing baby is quite challenging as they keep on moving and are totally unpredictable. Hence it takes patience, practice and a whole lot of shooting.

Few tips that make baby photography a bit easier:

• Turning the flash off and using natural light creates more opportunities for candid situations.

• Taking posed photographs are great but the candid shots helps you capture the baby playing unselfconsciously. Such candid shots are the ones which are treasured the most.

•Know your camera well in order to get more creative with your shots.

Newborn Photography is not just a cute affair but the fun and creativity involved in the photo sessions make it one of the most amazing jobs. Props play a crucial role in every newborn photography session but choosing the appropriate one is also necessary. Few props that are favorites of every professional newborn photographer as well as the parents of the child are as follows:

• Comfy Wraps:

Wraps provide a sense of comfort and security to the newborns as most of the babies don’t like to have their hands and feet free. Wrap them up while they are awake and capture them posing nicely with open eyes.

• Soft Faux Furs:

o Faux furs in basket and crates create an extremely comfortable space for babies to sleep on. The soft furs can also be used on floors creating beautiful shots with the baby lying on it.

•    Cute Hats and Headbands:

Placing a cute and colorful hat or a sweet little headband (girl) on the baby’s head is one of the most popular props that professional baby photographers adore. Usually soft and stretchy hats with cute animal faces, flowers, and buttons sewn on them make the photographs look extremely adorable.

•Versatile Crates and Baskets:

Crates and baskets are all time favorite props of most of the newborn photographers as these props are extremely versatile. Adding faux furs and soft textured fabrics to it makes it comfortable for the baby to sleep or sit on it and beautiful to photograph.

•Stuffed Animals:

Take the cuteness factor one notch up by adding stuffed animals to the baby’s portrait. Along with that the baby gets a fun toy to interact with! The classic teddy bears in the baby’s hands has always been a great prop to work with. Also, asking the parents for other stuffed toys is a great idea.

Before choosing a prop few things must be taken into consideration for the safety of the baby.

• Make sure there are no sharp or rough edges or anything that might hurt the newborn.

• Never place a newborn on a stuff made of glass.

•Ensure that the props do not sit too high off the ground.

•While buying baskets ensure that the basket base is strong enough and weighs more than that of the baby so that they don’t tip over.

•As the newborn’s skin is extremely sensitive, make sure the prop has soft and comfortable linings so that their skin never gets in direct contact with the prop.
