New Regional Visas Announcement - Does It Slash the Immigration Levels?

by Migration Centre of Australia Registered Migration Agent in Australia

The Australian government has slashed down the number of permanent visas that it offers every year after announcing two new ‘geographically restricted’ skilled visas. The new skilled regional visas are offering to those migrants and dependent family members who wish to switch to Australia for work and living.

These two new regional visas are -

  1. Skilled employer sponsored regional (provisional) visa- the sponsorship visa offered by employers
  2. Skilled work regional (provisional) visa - for those nominated by a State or Territory Government or sponsored by an eligible family member

Is It Slashing the Immigration Levels?

The aim of the new regional visas is to encourage migrants to choose other regional areas of Australia for migration instead of only Sydney, Melbourne and Southeast Queensland. It is to ease congestion in Australian’s major cities and to distribute the population to regional areas. The Australian government has announced 23,000 visas to be reserved for new skilled regional visas among 160,000 permanent visas which are issued under Australian’s scaled back migration planning level.

The Australian government has the plan to encourage international students to choose other regional areas of Australia for studies apart from its major cities. There is a plan to offer scholarships to overseas students to attract them to choose other regional areas for higher studies. Moreover, there is a plan to offer overseas students an additional year to live in Australia under a post study work visa. The aim of the Australian government is to ease off the migration rate overall.

Key Benefits

Holders of the new skilled regional provisional visas will work and live in the regional area where the validity period of the visa is up to 5 years. They can apply for a Permanent Residence Visa which will be commenced in November 2022. The holder of the new skilled regional visa has to show they have lived and worked in the regional area to qualify for permanent residency.

If the migration is issued by regional employers and State and Territory Governments, migrants can access more occupations than equivalent non-regional visas.

According to the current occupations, holders of the skilled employer sponsored regional visa can become eligible for more than 450 occupations.

Five additional points for regional nomination or sponsorship will come up as an advantage for potential migrants looking to apply for regional visas.

Conclusion

These regional visas will come into action in November 2019. It is not going to impact on those who have already existing visas.
