New Apps Boost for Google Glass

by Sakshi Sharma Mobility Strategist
Google’s first and only physical device, which has been a talking point all over, is in for some fresh apps boost. Soon, you’ll be seeing Twitter, Tumblr, CNN, Elle, and Facebook apps, collectively termed ‘Glassware’, joining the two and only pre-existing Glass properties which came from Path and New York Times respectively.

Seeing mobile apps turn the smartphone world on its head, Google’s pressing ahead on
redefining our existing equation with apps. Though for now, it’s been more of a cautious exercise rather than a giant stride as Glass apps contend with limited data access and unavailability of ads. Also, an app, being subject to partial data access, can’t read into users’ Glass data all the way.

This cautious approach comes from the vision of creating dedicated Glass apps as against porting mobile apps to the Glass.  The reasons are fairly obvious: Glass is very different from a smartphone, and Glass apps actually align with users’ line of sight. That makes it imperative fitting into smaller screen sizes, and above all, keeping the view from cluttering.

This in a sense is an opportunity worth seizing for apps developers and businesses. In fact, Google has gone ahead itself in laying down a few fundamental Glassware developer guidelines like: optimizing mobile apps for still smaller screens, and cutting to the chase with notifications so that users get a burst of quick information seamlessly on the Glass than on other devices.

CNN Glass app for example lets users classify exactly the news scoops they want delivered and at what times.  So if you want to be parsing through bits of entertainment and sports but no politics for instance, you can be delivered clips, snippets, and updates

Much the same way, Elle leverages users to choose sections they want showing up on Glass while picking out and sharing photos and videos built into stories.  There is in fact a designated setup monitoring real-time content like blog and other updates for being Glass-optimized.

The Facebook Glass app brings another sharing dimension to the Glass. Earlier, you could only share photos via Google Plus, but with the Facebook app, it would now be possible clicking and sharing Facebook pics with Glass.

Twitter also came around with a new Glass app version that allows streamlining tweets to a limited group of users. It allows receiving posts only from a selected bunch and having those transcribed into voice. The app from Tumblr also comes with a similar leverage.Though Glassware is still nascent, early adopters of technology have always ruled the roost.
