Nephrotic Syndrome- An Overview

by Jackson R. Web Marketing

Nephrotic syndrome is characterized by high levels of protein and cholesterol in your urine. On the other hand, the presence of protein can also become remarkably low in the bloodstream. This means that the total amount of protein available to be absorbed by your body is very low and the muscles of your body enter a state of depletion.

This is not a disease, but a warning sign that your kidneys are being damaged by certain hostile factors. If left untreated, you may end up having a kidney failure. This is why it is important to treat the cause soon.

Ancillary Medical provides you with an overview of nephritic syndrome which will help you recognize this condition quickly.

Causes

There are tiny blood capillaries known as glomeruli in both kidneys. These structures are responsible for filtering waste from your blood stream and also draw out excess water. Normal kidneys are programmed to retain the right amount of protein bound to your blood cells.

In case the tiny glomeruli are damaged, excess protein will slip out into your urine and cause muscle wastage. Additionally, fluid buildup takes place inside the various tissues of your body resulting in overall swelling.

The following reasons put increased pressure on the kidneys and cause them to malfunction:

·         Nil disease (minimal change disease)is the leading cause of nephritic syndrome in children.

·         The main cause of nephrotic malfunction in adults is diabetes.

·         Membranous glopmerulopathy is a kind of disease that damages local blood vessels.

·         Segmental glomerulosclerosis is a disease that acts as a trigger to nephritic disease.

·         Lupus, some kinds of cancer, HIV, Hepatitis B and C are also responsible to provoke nephritic syndrome.

·         NSAIDs (Non- Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs).

Symptoms

·         Swelling (edema) around your eyes, ankles and feet.

·         Fatigue.

·         Visible water retention.

·         Weight gain.

·         Foamy urine.

·         Loss of appetite.

Diagnostic tools

The following tools are used by doctors to diagnose nephritic syndrome:

·         Urine tests (for the quantitative measurement of protein in urine).

·         Blood tests (quantitative measurement of cholesterol, sugar and protein in blood).

·         Ultrasound (to check for morphological changes in the kidneys).

·         Kidney biopsy.

Treatment

Nephrotic syndrome has no decisive treatment. Ancillary measures are available which slow down or inhibit further damage to the nephritis apparatus.

Treatment is advised according to your age and the reason triggering the syndrome.

In some patients, reducing the body’s autoimmune defenses is opted for. This is carried out by administering:

·         Corticosteroids

·         Cyclophosphamides and cyclosporins

You may also require additional medication for all the other problems that the syndrome brings along. These include water retention, blood clots, and elevated levels of blood pressure, blood cholesterol, and triglycerides. Medicines for these include:

·         Beta blockers – To reduce blood pressure.

·         Diuretics–Ease water retention and lower blood pressure indirectly.

·         Blood thinners -Such as heparin and warfarin to prevent clot formation.

·         Statins– To reduce blood triglyceride and cholesterol content.

The medical employment of ancillary solutions has made it possible to diagnose and treat Nephrotic Syndrome effectively.
