Need to Know About Tyre Treads? Here’s a Suitable Guide

by Bathlane Garage Buy Tyres Mansfield
The legal limit for tyre tread depths in the UK is 1.6mm across 75% of the width of the car tyre, but this doesn't mean that motorists should aim to run their tyres with maximum tread depth all of the time.

If your tyres are worn, they won't grip as well or look as good – which can affect your safety and increase your fuel consumption.

So you want to make sure you're not driving around on illegal tyres. Here's how to check them yourself

It's easy enough for anyone to check the age of a tyre by taking a quick look, but it takes practice to be able to estimate its age accurately at first glance. You'll soon get used to what different ages look like.

So, where can you check the age of your tyres? It's best to do it when the Michelin Tyres Mansfield is cold – that is after they've been sitting out in the open for at least half an hour. It would be best if you always kept them off concrete or other scorching surfaces to avoid inaccurate measurements…

·         Place a ruler across your tyre tread and use one edge to line up with the broadest point of one side of the tread pattern, and then measure across to the most significant part of the contrasting pattern. That measurement needs converting into millimetres. For example, if you have 4mm between your lines on both tyres, you would have 8mm across 75% of each tyre width.

·         You will now know whether your car tyres are worn out or not. Tyres should ideally have at least 10mm between the lines across 75% of the width of each tyre

·         The age of your tyres will be four years if they meet the legal limit, but it's possible for them to still legally pass MOT tests even when they're older than this. They must, however, show no signs of cracking or splitting, and there must be no lumps or bulges under their treads…

If you can't measure 4mm between the lines on your car tyres, it's time to get new ones. If you find that your car has illegal tyres, don't drive on them – take them off the rims immediately and replace them with new matching ones right away.

What Does It Mean by Tyre Age?

It means how old the tyre is. It also helps you check if your current tyre size for your car is legal or not and enables you to get a new one when it's past its age.

What Does It Mean by Tyre Wear?

Some worn-out parts of the tyres (used to be) known as tread, which affects safety while driving in wet conditions and other bad weathers. When this tread wears out, you need to change your tyres. This should always be a bit of advice given by your car dealer or mechanic because sometimes it can affect other parts like suspension and steering system due to unbalanced weight while rolling on the road.

How Old Should Tyres Be?

Tyres age limit is four years, and you must change them before they get too old, so check your tyre tread, and if it's not more than 3mm, then it’s time to change tires ASAP. Tread depth does not go away or disappears overnight, so tires can also be checked while buying them by checking the minimum tread depth of 1.6mm on 75% of the car tire width.

Suppose your current tyres are below this level. In that case, it means you need new ones ASAP because driving around with worn-out tyres is very bad for yourself, other drivers on-road on the road and also for people walking around on footpaths or crossing roads etc. in cars in front of you who might suddenly come in front your car which you can't see because of your car Tyres Mansfield’s position on the road not allowing you to drive generally as the tyres are too bad to be used.

What Does It Mean by Illegal Tyres?

It means that those specific tyres do not meet legal requirements and should never be driven on roads or driven near any other people as they can cause accidents or death if no precaution is taken, like driving with only two good tires instead of four etc. It's also against the law, which can land you up in jail for a few months and delicate (in some countries), so don't use them at all until new ones change them. You can even be permanently banned from driving your car if an accident occurs because someone dies because of getting hit by your car, so please think of the consequences before using illegal tyres.
