We’re in an era where we’re all busy dealing with several projects and tasks at once. It goes without saying therefore, that we expect our machines to multitask, too. That is why multifunction printers (MFPs), also known as all-in-ones are growing in popularity and their demand is on the rise. An MFP combines print, copy, scan, and fax functions in one package. These devices are especially attractive for personal use, small or home-based businesses and even executive offices. There are various types of multifunction laser printers available in the market. Inkjet MFPs are the most popular ones as the initial cost of acquiring the product is low. Not to mention they are compact, easily portable and produce high quality documents. Some of the drawbacks of inkjet multifunction printers are that they tend to print more slow than other printer counterparts, and that the cost of replacing the ink sometimes overrides the cost of the unit itself.

While laser MFP’s may be more costly, they tackle many of the shortcomings of inkjet MFP’s. They're faster; the print quality is better and is also designed to handle higher volumes when compared to inkjet printers. Laser MFP’s though, require a good deal of space – so before purchasing the product, make sure you have enough floor space at your disposal. As multifunction printers vary widely in how well they handle certain chores, zero in on which functions are the most important to you and then purchase accordingly. Depending on what functions you want your MFP to handle, there are a range of machines depending on size and capabilities to choose from. Larger and more robust models are being developed for larger organizations.  The advantages multi function printers have over other similar devices is of course that it combines multiple capabilities into one machine. They are convenient and rather simple to use; not to mention that it does away with any additional equipment in the office.

More often than not, they have one power cord which typically then reduce energy consumption, and thereby leads to increased cost savings. Without added expenditure, you can receive or send the occasional fax, and have the ability to scan and print images all from one device. This saves you time, office space and as mentioned before, the added unnecessary expenditure of yet another separate device.

Many MFP’s (both inkjet and laser) come with slots for digital camera memory cards. These slots simplify the transfer of digital photos to your computer, where you can use software bundled within the multifunction printer to fine-tune your images. Some models even have control-panel LCDs so you can preview and print photos without having a computer.

In conclusion, though most users are content with smaller and simpler inkjet machines, the speed and high-volume capacity of laser MFP’s are tough to beat.
