Moving-In Checklist: What to Do before You Move

by Emma Joyce Interior designer

Moving to a new home is one of the most stressful situations you’ll experience in your life. Dealing with finding a new place, selling your current property, and moving all of your stuff can be exhausting. In addition to that, people are always in a hurry to achieve everything on time and always leave something behind, and this could cause unexpected problems. All these things can be avoided if you pay attention to details long before you start packing. By planning ahead, you’ll have enough time to deal with everything and achieve all your tasks before it’s time to start relocating. The last thing you’ll want to do in the moving process is to deal with unnecessary problems caused by bad time management. This list will help you be prepared and finish everything on time.

Redirect your post

There are some things you need to do first as soon as you start planning your move. This is something many homeowners overlook and they don’t think about redirecting their post before they move into a new space. This is the main reason why their mail sometimes gets lost and they need quite a long time to get all their mail once they’ve settled in a new home. To avoid this, ensure all your bills and mail arrive at your new address in order to avoid any confusion. If you’re subscribed to magazines, inform the publishers of your new address and let them know when they can start sending your magazines to the new address. This is important when it comes to your credit card bills as well, because it can cost you a lot of money if you don’t pay them on time.

Hire a moving company

Although you may think that you can move the majority of your belongings by yourself, it’s always better to hire a moving company to do that instead of you. Depending on the amount of stuff you have, you need to find a company that has a proper vehicle and equipment to transport all your things to the new location safely. Write down all the big items first and then work towards smaller possessions to get the feeling of the number of boxes you’ll need. Many companies offer packing and unpacking and it’s better to leave it to professionals to deal with these processes. Create a plan with them in order to know how long it will take them to relocate all your belongings.

Do something for yourself

Before you start moving, do something for yourself in order to spend some quality time with your family. A good idea is to take a small trip that will help you relax and be prepared for what is in store for you. You can always browse through the travel magazine to get inspired and find the best destination and tips for having the best holiday.

Buy the necessary tools

In case you’re not moving into a brand new home or building one on your own - in other words, if you’re moving into a fixer-upper that needs your immediate attention, you need to be ready to do some work. From replacing your windows and repainting your walls to fixing your floors and updating your kitchen cabinets, all these projects are going to boost the value of your property, but also make it more livable for you and your family. Finding the right tools for these projects is also a must, so consult someone with more experience to get the right models. Ask your friends about the best painting tools, find a brand new toolbox on discount, and check out the best-reviewed corded reciprocating saw that will make your most complicated projects much easier. In the end, don’t be afraid to invest some time and energy into these updates because you’ll be creating a nicer living space for your future.

Relocate your utilities

If you want to move into your new home and have water, electricity, and a Wi-Fi connection straight away, you need to think about relocating your utilities long before the moving day. You need to think in advance and find a company that can help you safely connect electricity and other utilities. By finding reliable experts, you can be sure your new house is going to have everything you need from day one. Many homeowners think they can do all of that along the way, but this process can be difficult if you decide to do it on your own.

Double-check potential problems

You did a full-house inspection and fixed all the potential problems before moving, but it’s better to check everything again to be sure it’s all working perfectly. For instance, leaks are among the most common problem new homeowners have to deal with as soon as they move into a new home. To avoid this, go to your place a few days before moving and check for potential water and gas leaks just to be sure nothing bad has happened since the inspection you performed before buying the property.

Create a schedule

With everything organized and prepared, all you have left to do is create a moving schedule and think about the cost of your move. Start by organizing your moving company and creating a timetable for the arrival of your furniture and other belongings. This is important if you’re moving with your kids. Also, you’ll be quicker and more efficient by breaking big tasks into smaller ones and getting all your family members involved in the move as well.

Although it seems like you won’t be able to manage everything on your own, a little organization goes a long way, and you’ll be able to finish everything on time. Another thing you need to keep in mind is relaxing and enjoying this process as much as you can.
