Motor Lubrication – Harmful Effects of Over Greasing and How To Deal With it
Lubrication has a crucial role to play in bearing maintenance. It lessens the friction, blocks wear and tear by keeping apart the parts that work in collaboration with one another by introducing a thin layer. When it comes to Motor lubrication, most of you would think more is better, right? In fact, overgreasing motors and elements is a common practice but considered as a harmful one for your equipment life.
This post will help you understand the harmful affects of over greasing and several ways to avoid it, together with a few tips to control over greasing.
Hazards of Over GreasingThis post will help you understand the harmful affects of over greasing and several ways to avoid it, together with a few tips to control over greasing.
Too much lubrication may cause higher operating temperatures and seal failures. Since a large amount of grease absorbed in the bearing cavity may cause rotating bearing components to start churning and taking the grease out of the way, thus becoming a cause for additional energy loss and increased temperatures. Rapid oxidation of the grease is increased up, along with the rate of oil bleed, which means the oil is set apart from the thickener. Yet, high temperatures and the uplifting rate of oil bleed will shape the grease thickener into a robust, crustlike build-up that will harm future lubrication applications because it'll block new grease from penetrating the core of the bearing. This results in wearing away of the elements and downright component failure.
Over greasing is one of the main reasons for seal damages and breakdowns. Because grease guns can make up to 15,000 psi, lip seals can crack enabling pollutants to enter the bearing housing. When too much pressure is delivered from a grease gun, it’s easy for the gluey, hard grease to break down and find its way into the bearing frame.

How to Avoid Over Greasing?
The most effective way to avoid the problems of over greasing is by following a maintenance program. In this program, each lube point is analyzed end-to-end throughout the facility. Records are kept up for carrying out future repair or analyses of the point. Once this is planned out, you need to determine the frequency of applications and amount of grease needed to apply at every point. The amount of grease needed is determined by the dimensions of the bearing or bearing housing.
Careful precautions must be taken when applying lubrication to such sections of bearings and the bearing housings, or you may face sudden breakdowns to bearings and seals, and in the end, may have a complete component breakdown due to over greasing - which is easily avoidable.
