by Superior Cars Auto Repair Garage in Northampton

MOT, in the UK, is mandatory for all the drivers and they have to keep the MOT certificate with them just like they keep other legal documents.

The main objective of Ford MOT Northampton test is to certify that the vehicle is roadworthy and does not have any serious issues.

Before we talk about the MOT rules in detail, let us have a look at the brief history of the MOT test.

History of MOT test

The decision to take the MOT test was first made in 1960 under the direction of Ministry of Transport Under powers in the Road Traffic Act 1956.

Originally, this examination was designed as a basic checkup of different parts of the vehicle. These car components included steering, brakes, and lights. Initially the test was mandatory to have after 10 years of the registration date of the vehicle and then the driver had to submit the vehicle every year. This test was widely known as ‘ten year test’ or Ministry of Transport test’.

In 1961, the rule changed and now, it was mandatory to submit the vehicle after 7 years of the registration and the rule was modified again in 1967  when the testable age was reduced to 3 years.

On 1 January 1983, the testable age was reduced to 1 year for ambulances, taxis, and vehicles with more than eight passenger seats.

Over the years, the items to be tested also increased. For example, tyres, windscreen wipers, and washers, horns, exhaust, body structure, chassis, emission tests etc.

Advanced MOT test rules

Nowadays, the MOT test divides the issues into three categories: minor, major, and dangerous.

These categories are made to decide the results after the test.

What if you clear the test?

You clear the test if your vehicle does not have any issues or it has minor issues. In case of minor issues, the MOT test will pass the test with an advisory that you need to fix all the issues as soon as possible.

What if you fail the test?

if your car is found to have major or dangerous faults, your vehicle will fail its test.

In case of major issues, you can move your car to fix the issues and then, you can apply for a retest within working days. If you fail to submit your vehicle within ten working days, you will have to sit in the test again.

If your car dangerous issues, you will not be allowed to drive your car and you have to fix the issues as soon as possible.

It is not mandatory that you resolve the problems in the MOT center. You may try to fix the issues in your preferred garage.

If you want any further information about the test, you can contact any reliable and authorized MOT center.
