Most Common Harvest and Post-Harvest Equipment

With the Philippines being an agricultural nation, you will surely notice the variety of machinery used by farmers and agriculture-related companies during the harvest and post-harvest season. With that in mind, are you fully aware of their uses?

Here’s are some of the most common harvest and post-harvest machinery that you will find:

1. Harvesters - Of course, this is number one. After all, this piece of equipment is the most important machine during harvest time. There are so many different kinds of harvesters used on farms these days, such as:
  • Bean harvester;
  • Beet harvester;
  • Carrot harvester;
  • Grain harvester/stripper;
  • Corn harvester;
  • Forage or silage harvester;
  • Over-the-row mechanical harvester; and more.

2. Chaser Bin (Grain Cart) - Large-scale grain and corn farms usually own or rent chaser bins which are very useful during the harvest season. This farm equipment is utilized to transport harvested grains from a header to a hauling device used to travel long distances.

Chaser bins make harvesting faster and more efficient since it allows harvesters to continuously work without stopping and unloading.

3. Grain Dryer - The Philippines is dependent on grains such as rice and corn, which is why this machine is commonly used by large farming businesses.

According to the Grain Drying Systems by the Grain Elevator and Processing Society (GEAPS), there are three types of continuous flow grain drying systems:

  • Crossflow dryers where the air and grains move in a perpendicular direction with each other;
  • In concurrent-flow dryers, the air and the grains move in a parallel manner; and,
  • Mixed flow dryers, of course, have varied airflow patterns.

4. Conveyor Belts - These devices are versatile as heck. You’ve probably seen these used in airports to move your luggage, shopping malls to transport your groceries with ease, and factories to make production faster and more systematic.

Now, the agriculture sector, especially during the harvest season values the use of the great conveyor belt. It helps with the transportation of crops in bulk, and even the processing of these raw materials into other products.
