Skillfully bedecked interiors not only function well but it also creates a mood and eludes the personality of the family that lives there. From the front gate and wall designs, everything speaks of the aesthetics and tastes of the family. Before painting and reorganizing, spend some time thinking about your family and how you live. Flip through magazines for inspiration and pin on ideas or rooms that appeal to you. This is the beginning of a well-planned and decorated living area. Function: Decorating is more than just eye appeal and it is more of making a room really works for you. Look for the focal point such as a fireplace, a bay window with a view, maybe even a quirky bookcase. Create a focal point with a dynamic piece of art or a colorful area rug. The next step is furniture and lighting. If a piece of furniture is too large or too small for the size of the room, get rid of it. Lighting should be selected for the functions of the room as well as for visual appeal. The arrangement of the furniture itself is a very important aspect of function. Generally, the main furniture pieces are directed toward the focal point.

Mood: The mood of a room is created by the choice of colors, the technique of furnishings, the amount of texture and pattern and the accessories. From creating the matching gate designs to perfecting the color scheme, all these aspects are essential in setting the mood. The easiest way by far to decorate is to start with some source of inspiration. It's the basis for selecting your theme, colors, patterns and textures. Analyze your inspiration piece and develop a theme for it. Colors should always support the theme. Usually, it's best to choose three colors in a room: a dominant color, used for walls, carpeting and fabric backgrounds; a secondary color, found throughout the room in fabrics and accessories; and an accent color, used sparingly to give energy and excitement to the room.  Aside from being functional, your furniture plays an important role in supporting your theme.

Personality: Add a personal touch on a well-planned room by adding elements of your taste in every nook and cranny. It can be something whimsical like a piece of a fun quilt over the fireplace or something unexpected like a brightly painted ceiling or piece of furniture. Letting your hair down and getting creative are the best two ways to add a touch of YOU in your room. However, don’t go too overboard, as at times a piece that you think speaks to you is not something that gels well with your overall theme.
