Money Heist Season 5: Are Rio and Tokyo Getting Back Together?

by Eva Watson Writer

Money Heist, a Spanish series on Netflix which has smashed all the records of viewership as a non-English title, and racked up 65 million views on its fourth part. The series features a lot of uncanny characters, and the relationship shared among them is unusually interesting. That said, Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó) and Rio (Miguel Herrán) are quite the bizarre love birds who have been through lots of ups and downs in their relationship.

Now that it has been officially announced that Money Heist (also known as La Casa De Papel) will be returning for a fifth and final season on Netflix in around 2021, there is excitement among the fans. Plus, a new clue, teasing that maybe Rio and Tokyo will get back together in the final series. So, where are you putting your money?

Are Rio and Tokyo Getting Back Together?

Rio and Tokyo have been tied together since the very beginning of the show. They started the journey of grand heists together as casual friends and became couples in no time. Initially, they tried to keep their relationship from others in the group because it was totally against the professor’s (Álvaro Morte) rule for his heist. As the other members slowly got acquainted with their little love affair, problems started rolling in. The more the groupies turned against their relation, the more closer they grew.

Season 2 ended with the crew members thinking that they fled, won the heist, and went on to live their lives lavishly. This is where season 3 begins with Tokyo and Rio living together on a tropical island. Soon, Tokyo leaves for her adventures, when Rio gets arrested, bringing the pair to an end. Rio finds his way out and joins the gang.

Later, in season 4, Rio and Stockholm (Esther Acebo) start bonding over, and Tokyo grows jealous of this new friendly relation between them. However, season 4 ends up on an abrupt note, where Rio deals with his demons, and Tokyo faces bigger threats from Gandia (José Manuel Poga); leaving the relationship among the three undefined. This probably left the viewers curious about how the darlings from the first season ended up. Happily together or furiously apart? Therefore heading into the show’s finale with season 5, fans have already started digging about what the future might hold for the pair.

The actors from the show also don’t back out, when it comes to creating excitement. That said, Úrsula Corberó, starring as Tokyo in the series, posted an image on Instagram with herself and Herrán (Rio) in their costumes filming on set. She captioned the picture, “Armed up to the breasts, always @Miguel.g.Herran.” While the image is supposedly a joking snap but many took it as a clue to the pair getting closer once again. Well, if this means that the pair are getting back together or at least doing more scenes together, then the fans will surely be delighted.

In an interview, Corbero opened up and told how she is unsure about whether or not the relationship between Rio and Tokyo is toxic. She thinks that the protective behavior of Tokyo towards Rio, given his vulnerabilities could be a bit difficult for them to tackle the situations they are in.

Whatever happens, the last season is about to release. At least we know that it will be the final season. About Rio and Tokyo reuniting or not, the audience will have to wait and see for themselves.
