Modern Day Learning Powered by New Technologies

by Ron J. Educational Expert
Learning inspires people to travel on different paths. Usually not the ones they currently are on, but the ones they are interested to go to. Therefore they read or study more about the path or destination so they can get there faster. Most of the time this learning process will provide the student with helpful skills at work or additional knowledge in his/hers day to day life. A big percentage of the people willing to learn are ready and eager to consume education early in the morning.

This process is described as "pulled learning" and it is focused on the learner's needs. The learning process is associated with their decisions to pick up a course to study and their preferences related to the learning schedule. We have a lot of examples for platforms offering such types of education where the student goes through the search categories and finds the useful information they are looking for. Platforms like Lynda.com, Khan Academy, and Coursera offers exactly this type of service.

Learning also inspires creators to create learning content and learning educators to distribute it. Using their craft and skills to write materials or record video lessons, they end up with enough content to form a curriculum. This is process is called "pushed learning". A lot of teachers are using this type of approach in order to distribute learning materials to their audience groups. Math teachers, foreign language teachers, and investment educators to name a few, use it to distribute their learning materials. Often, companies are paying educators to create this content internally or externally for their clients' learning needs. In the age of more and more privacy and personal data breaches, protecting the content you create has equal value to the content itself. So, to assign the learning material securely companies use learning management systems (LMS) to provide the learning to their audience. If you type the LMS abbreviation in your browser search engine a lot of suggestions for systems will pop up. With this approach comes other benefits that could provide the exact type of content to a learning group, input learning history, run reports and many more features.

What systems are commonly used in today's learning environment and what is LDS?

Modern day technologies and know-how made possible the creation of new generation of LMSs called Learning Distribution Systems, or LDS. The purpose of the LDS is not to replace the LMS, in fact they can be used simultaneously. The learning distribution system can be used to distribute and assign online courses hosted on an LMS. Teachers can use this to customize emails to their target audience outside of their LMS standards. The learning distribution system has the same functionalities as the LMS, it can track completions, run SCORM courses, assign programs, etc. But the real advantages of the LDS are the speed and the ease of content integration, if any. Most of the LDS systems need just the web link to the course to provide it to a single person or a group of people.

Either way you choose to obtain or share knowledge - as a learner or as a content creator, the best part is that if a fair amount of ambition to accomplish personal or company goals is shown, you will never know where learning will take you. One part is certain, though, it will be a real journey for sure.
