Mobility Solutions for Disable or Elder Citizens

by Sarah Peter Contributor

The process of selecting the right mobility solution for disable elders in your house can be tricky at first. There are so many options that can make you confuse in selecting the accurate mobility device. In order to know what mobility solutions for the elderly to consider, elevate their needs and their current physical state. Then examine your house structure with the need of your elders.

For example, if they have a problem moving from one room to another room, a wheelchair or a walker would be best for them. It will help them to move easily from one place to another. If they are having trouble climbing or descending stairs having a motorized stairlift can be perfect for them to eliminate the risk of falling off or slipping.

Aging safely into a place can be made easier by using three general mobility devices. These devices can make these senior citizens more independent and allow them to move around without getting stuck in a single room.

Ø  Walkers and Canes

These are the most general mobility devices that are easily available in the market. They can make a huge difference for people who are suffering from weakness, lower-body pain, or balance difficulties.

Both mobility solutions for the elderly support them to move comfortably and safely and maintain a healthy posture. There are various types of walkers and canes an individual can select from.

Ø  Stairlifts

Moving from up and down by using stairs multiple times a day can be a very difficult and sometimes impossible task for many elders. If using stairs is difficult for your older adult, you should consider fixing a stairlift in your home for them.

A stairlift is a chair that’s fixed to a mechanical rail. A person can sit on this chair, and this stairlift will glide them up and down the stairs. It can take anyone to move up and down the stairs without any effort.  A stairlift can be fitted on both types, straight and curved staircases. They can also be personalized to match the rest of the decoration of the house.

Ø  Power wheelchairs

A power wheelchair is also the most commonly used, a perfect device used for mobility purposes. It allows individuals with paralysis or lower body weakness to get around quickly and easily.

Before selecting a mobility device for your elders, consider to consult with your older adult’s doctor and check their health insurance. The doctor can direct you about the mobility device that will be perfect for your older adult.
