Mistakes Made in Caring for Dentures
by Shawn Denture WebmasterDenture wearers should
get into the habit of properly caring for their dentures. There are a number of
common mistakes made by denture wearers which can cause health problems for the
individuals.
Wearing Ill-Fitting Dentures
Ill-fitting dentures can cause food debris to be trapped between your gums and
the dentures, easily resulting in gum infection and inflammation. Furthermore,
poorly-fitted dentures can rub against your gums during chewing. This will cause
swelling and soreness, and may lead to a callus, which might require oral
surgery to correct. Sometimes people with unresolved problems regarding denture
fit either consciously or unconsciously start to avoid eating, or only eat soft
foods, resulting in digestive problems or other health issues. It's important
to report any problems with denture fit to your dentist. The dentures can be
recast to get the correct fit, or relined with acrylic molds so the appliance
will fit your gums better.
Not Soaking Dentures Overnight
If you simply leave your dentures on a nightstand or countertop overnight, they
can acquire bacteria which will go into your mouth when put the dentures in the
next morning. Not only that, dentures which are allowed to dry out can change
shape, causing all the problems which come from a bad fit.
Not Taking Care of Your Gums
Even if you wear a full set of dentures, you must remember to take care of your
gums. After you have removed your dentures and put them to soak, rinse your mouth
with warm water. Then, use a very soft toothbrush or a washcloth to massage
your gums. There are toothbrushes manufactured for people who have had
periodontal surgery. Try to find one of those in your local drugstore.
Not Eating a Well-Balanced Diet
As noted above, some people change their eating habits because their dentures
don't fit properly. Fruits and vegetables might be difficult for you to chew,
but you should make an effort to eat them. They contain nutrients which are
essential to good health. Research studies have concluded that having a
nutritious diet helps slow the progress of periodontal (gum) disease. Eating
healthier food means that your mouth will be healthier.
Not Treating Your Dentures Gently
In addition to dentures being expensive, the appliances are not indestructible.
Treat your dentures gently. Don't use a toothpick while wearing them, and don't
use a hard brush while cleaning them. When you remove your dentures for
cleaning, do so over a bowl of water or a folded towel. If you drop your
dentures, they'll fall into the water-filled bowl and settle softly on the
towel.
Not Keeping Your Dentures Away from Children
Your dentures might look like a toy or Halloween costume accessory to young
children. When soaking your dentures, don't place them in a location where
children can reach them. You don't want to have the children playing with your
dentures or attempting to try them on.
Don't Forget to Brush Your Dentures
Cleaning your dentures involves more than merely soaking them overnight. Before
you were fitted with dentures, you should have been brushing your natural teeth
after every meal. Your dentures are your teeth, even though they are artificial
ones. Use a soft toothbrush to clean your dentures regularly.
