Men's Fashion Guide to Wearing Prints like a Pro

by Vikram Sharma Textile designer

Do you want to know what this blog is all about? So, here's a print for you! (Sarcasm intended) Nothing is more unappealing to a man than a man who messes up his printed outfits. Whether it's your kurta over cotton vest, shirt, or pants, matching the right print with the right shade and combo is like putting together a puzzle. With just one bad idea, the entire picture is ruined. And we don't believe anyone would want that.

So, to avoid future fashion faux pas or to simply boost your style quotient, we've compiled a list of printed apparel you should own and 10 different ways to wear it!

1. Blue Denim Jeans + Slip-Ons + Sunglasses

A classic example of fusion print is the ditsy pattern on a short kurta with a banded collar and rolled-up sleeves. When paired with blue/black denim jeans, a black/maroon slip-on, and sunglasses (only if it's sunny and outside), this type of print can easily be pulled off at a family event. Put on a beaded bracelet to complement the printed short kurta and you're ready to go.

2. Cotton Trousers + Leather Slippers + Hat

If you think short kurtas are too rustic for you, pair them with loose cotton trousers, a hat, and leather slippers. Most guys don't experiment with this understated look. However, if properly arranged, it can spruce up your entire ensemble as well as your confidence. Furthermore, this houndstooth print is worthy of admiration, even from men.

3. Black Chinos/Jeans + Kolhapuris + Bracelets

For men, here's a clean-cut short kurta look inspired by Indian prints. This outfit is not only appropriate for a casual family gathering, but it is also appropriate for casual Fridays at work. Accessorize with a watch, bracelets, and Kolhapuri sandals. If you don't want to wear sandals, white sneakers are a great alternative.

4. Blue Slim Jeans + Loafers

Teardrop prints are typically inspired by the Paisley printing style, which originated in European culture in the 1600s. This print on an asymmetrical kurta is a perfect example of an Indo-western ensemble. Furthermore, if you pair this with blue slim jeans and loafers, the entire look will be complete. Accessorizing here would be excessive because the print will do all of the talking. Wear this to a low-key wedding or office party and you'll get all the compliments you can handle.

5. Plain Nehru Jacket + Churidar + Jutti

Another way to look stunning in a printed kurta is to pair it with a plain Nehru jacket, a churidar of the same colour, and a simple Jutti. This type of arrangement works best at an engagement party, especially if you're a groomsman. This kurta is inspired by floral patterns, but you can choose any unusual to trendy print you want. This is where all of the outlandish prints will shine.

6. Long Plain Kurta + Churidar

A long Shervani with cuts calls for a plain kurta and churidar set in the same colour. It's a royal look that's appropriate for any wedding or related event. It's always preferable to wear a Jutti underneath, but if you don't want to, try leather sandals. Add a bling stud to the look to make it stand out.

7. Medium-Length Kurta + Churidar

If you're not the groom, the best Shervani jackets are bold prints with a pastel colour palette in the base. Light colours usually draw attention away from your outfit and make the entire ensemble look modest and tasteful, including your hair, footwear, and accessories. On the day of the wedding, avoid wearing darker colours.

8. Plain Kurta + Dhoti

This look is a more traditional take on men's sherwani. Instead of a long jacket, a printed blazer looks stunning when paired with a matching kurta dhoti or south Indian white lungi set and a Jutti underneath. Our only piece of advice here is to avoid accessorising with bold prints like these. However, if you want to tone it down a bit, we recommend going for a lighter shade, most likely pastel.

9. Banded Collar Plain Shirt + Chinos + Derbys

For men who like to set trends, a quirky print on a traditional Nehru jacket is always a ravishing look. For Nehru jacket-inspired looks, a plain white or black shirt paired with black chinos/jeans and Derbys/oxfords is a winning ensemble. We wouldn't accessorise much if the jacket has bold prints, but sunglasses or glasses wouldn't hurt.

10. Plain Kurta + Dhoti Salwar

Print-on-plain is the most secure print-inspired look ever. Particularly for men. Purchase a set with a complimentary print and shade, or make your own.
