Medicinal Chemistry

by Manisha Singh Digital Marketing

The study of medicinal Chemistry includes synthesizing and developing new chemical moieties with findings of their properties, i.e., physical, chemical, and pharmacological properties pointing out their possible therapeutic applications. This chemistry involves studying current moieties and associated drugs and their co-relation with pharmacological action with quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR). Pharmaceutical Chemistry also deals with the check of drug quality and their validation for the rationale of pharmaceutical products.

Pharmaceutical chemistry involves the development, innovation, drawing, recognition of pharmacologically active moieties, and also the study of their ADME (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion) properties.

Medicinal chemistry is an interdisciplinary area by definition, and practitioners must have a strong background in organic chemistry, as well as a thorough understanding of biology ideas linked to cellular drug targets.

The pharmaceutical industry covers a wide range of specialties, although medicinal chemistry plays a consistent role in all aspects of the pharmaceutical sciences. It’s no wonder that people with a background in medicinal chemistry are drawn to this field because of the wide range of applications for their skills and experience.

Importance of medicinal chemistry

Medicinal chemists play an important role in drug development by selecting synthetic molecules that establish a structure-activity relationship and demonstrate efficacy and safety in preclinical animal testing.

The modern chemist’s position has been transformed by combinatorial chemistry, high-throughput screening, and molecularly specified targets that enable structure-based drug creation.

 Career Opportunities

Pharmaceutical corporations, biotech companies, government organizations, universities, and research institutes employ medicinal chemists in their biological laboratories. They are useful to the pharmaceutical and medical industries. Teams of scientists from various backgrounds work together in the lab.

Many medicinal chemists start in the lab and then move on to other laboratory careers like

  •         Process chemistry
  •         Formulation chemistry
  •         Quality control
  •         Quality assurance
