Medical marijuana is all set to revamp the image of marijuana

by Mark Abley Medical Marijuana

The word ‘marijuana' is enough to invite stares from certain corners because of the preconceived notions of it being associated with addictive practices, often for recreation. But what people fail to understand is that medical marijuana is also a concept that is slowly catching on and it is being recommended to treat common ailments and disorders thus proving that it can have a scientific counterpart also. Marijuana has been used for spiritual, recreational and medical purposes for as long as 5000 years and it has been part of many subculture movements too. The tumultuous 60s and the 70s saw its increasing use for recreation and spiritual awakening and was popular drug among artists, students, singers, and the like.

Though many people in many advanced countries continue to use it for the said purposes, the medical benefits associated with this drug has been the subject of many discussions and findings. The marijuana plant provides potent cure for many common ailments because of the fact that it contains around 400 chemicals. These chemicals can be sourced to 18 families which can be harmful if smoked but can provide relief in nausea, pain, glaucoma etc. if the dosage is known to the patients. There is still a lot of divide in the civilised society regarding the legalization of marijuana. But a look at the diseases they are said to cure might turn the tide in favour of this legalization.

The benefits of medical marijuana can be seen in the cases of the following diseases:

  1. Nausea – medical cannabis produce certain molecules in our body which have the effect of making us feel euphoric and in certain cases they also target receptors located in our brain, spinal cord, and immune tissues to ease symptoms of nausea and vomiting.

  2. Loss of Appetite – medical cannabis or medical marijuana has also been found to be effective in stopping weight loss and increasing appetite. In certain studies conducted on HIV/Aids patients, it showed promising results.

  3. Muscle tension – a study conducted on patients suffering from MS or Multiple Sclerosis showed that, medical cannabis could be used to lessen spasms and relax muscle tension.

  4. Pain – it has been a long standing belief among medical marijuana practitioners that it can provide remarkable relief in cases of chronic pain. Pain caused by amputation, surgery, MS, HIV or alcoholism, which fall in the category of neuropathic pain, is often treated with medical cannabis with remarkable results.

  5. Insomnia – medical cannabis can also be used as a relaxant especially if you are suffering from insomnia. It can relieve anxiety, and the improved sense of well being that patients experience after inhaling this drug, is often sleep inducing.

Given that the already mentioned benefits of medical cannabis can be earned with the right dosage, there should be more and more people rooting for the legalization of this drug.
