Majority of India’s water issue is related to groundwater, which is found in beneath of earth’s surface. India is one of the largest user of groundwater in the world. We utilizes 25 percent of all groundwater in the world, ahead of USA and China. And a large ratio of it is used in agriculture, it will remain the lifeline of India’s water supplies for years to come.
And a matter of fact, A writ petition was filed by advocate M.C. Mehta keeping in view the depleting levels of groundwater in the country.
On the basis of this report the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Central Groundwater Board, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the Delhi Waterworks and Sewerage Disposal Undertaking.
In reply to this notice, the Director of the Central Groundwater Board filed an affidavit. He stated in his affidavit that from 1962 onwards, the water levels in India are declining at a fast rate.
