by Daisy Wilkinson Travel Guides

If you're seeking an ideal destination to escape your hectic life and unwind amidst serene natural surroundings, Mauritius would be the right choice. This island nation is located in the Indian Ocean about 2,000 kilometres off the south-east coast of Africa. It is well-known for its enchanting white-sand beaches and some awe-inspiring attractions that are explored by plenty of tourists visiting this island country every year. You'll also have a wonderful time in this destination while interacting with its locals, as the Mauritians are well-known for their hospitality.

One of the popular attractions you'll get to visit during your Mauritius holidays is a beach and resort town located in Riviere du Rempart district. The beach has excellent facilities for a wide range of activities, such as swimming, water-skiing, windsurfing, and sailing. In recent times, it has become a point of departure for excursions to the islands located in the northern part of Mauritius, such as Flat Island and Serpent Island. You can discover some great marine life underwater with the help of underwater scooter or a submarine excursion. If you wish to shop for souvenirs, visit the fashion and craft shops nearby.

You'll have some memorable moments while exploring the Ile aux Cerfs Island, which is also called Deer Island. It is located in the Flacq district near this island nation's eastern coast and is spread over a vast area of 100 hectares. It is dotted with some beautiful natural features, such as lush green vegetation, outcrops of rock, white-sand beaches, and small lakes. While on this island, you can also indulge in some thrilling activities, such as snorkelling and trips in glass-bottom boats. You'll also find many restaurants on this island and a five-star hotel with a golf course.

The only national park situated in the south-western part of this island destination, Black River Gorges National Park covers a vast region of more than 6,000 hectares and occupies nearly 3.5 per cent of the country's total land area. You'll come across majestic waterfalls, adventurous hiking trails, and some charming natural surroundings while getting around in this island. Several endemic bird species can be seen in this park, such as the Mauritius kestrel, Mauritius bulbul, Mauritian flying fox, and Echo parakeet. Of the 700 plant species found on the island of Mauritius, nearly 311 rare species are nurtured in this national park. Another great place for witnessing vast spaces of greenery is Mauritius Botanical Garden, which is formerly known as Sir Seewoosagur Botanical Garden.

It is located in the district of Pamplemousse near Port Louis and is one of the best botanical gardens in the world. The botanical gardens nurture over 650 varieties of plants, including the more famous ones, such as Giant Water Lilies, Baobabs, and Palmier Bouteille. You'll also find many medicinal plants and a large spice garden while getting around in this botanical garden. Indira Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, and many other international dignitaries have visited this garden in the past and planted trees in it. Besides all the trees and plants, you can also explore an old colonial castle known as 'Chateau Mon Plaisir'.
