Materials Are Important for Timing Pulleys

by Nishi Enterprise Power Transmission Products Manufacturer and Expor
Timing pulleys are used in applications where power needs to be aligned and transmitted along with exact speed and gear. These specialized pulleys have teeth or pockets around on the outside of the pulley body. The teeth engage holes in the metal belt. In contrast, the pockets engage themselves with drive lugs in the inner circumferences of the timing belt. The pockets or teeth are only used for timing purposes and not for power transmission.

Different Types of Pulleys

The pulleys are of three main types:

  1. Fixed Pulley - it has an axle mounted in bearings to the supporting structure.
  2. Movable Pulley - It has an axle in the moving block
  3. Compound Pulley -  This is a combination of fixed and movable pulley that forms a block and tackle.

Material of Pulley

In any industrial application where a pulley is required, Engineers and designers always consider the material of the tinning pulley used before they commit any final design. The most common material used for timing pulleys by timing pulley manufacturers is Aluminium and Nylon.

Both the materials have advantages and disadvantages, but this depends on the type of application.

Nylon timing pulleys are light and offer excellent inertia control, which helps to save energy. Their characteristics include good wear and tear properties, chemical resistance, lower material cost, and no oxidation issues.

Aluminum timing pulleys are also light but heavier than Nylon. They have reasonable inertia control, excellent wear and tear characteristics. Because of their metallic chemical properties, they have some oxidation but otherwise mechanically durable.

Designs that use timing pulleys may have to encounter extremely high temperatures, exceeding 120 degrees Celsius. Nylon pulleys have a problem in such situations where they experience material deflection. Most timing belts have a maximum recommended operating temperature of around 82 degrees Celsius. If cost-saving is a factor, then a Nylon pulley is recommended; otherwise, aluminum pulleys are a better choice for high temperatures.

Timing Belt Pulley

It is a specialized pulley with teeth and pockets on the outside of the pulley's body diameter. Compared to traditional pulleys, the Timing belt has also driven friction between the pulley surfaces and the belt.

Many timing belt suppliers in India are increasingly using urethane material for timing belt pulleys as it works well in high-accuracy linear motion and conveying applications as they stretch little, are stiffer than neoprene material with less tooth deflection and slippages.

Timing belts come in two sizes, i.e., in metric (millimeters) and imperial (inches) dimensions. An increasing number of timing belt manufacturers in Ahmedabad are supplying timing belt pulley as they are cheaper and used in many applications in the automotive industry, robotics, and mechatronics through transportation and production systems.
