Have you ever been to Maremma? Discover this beautiful part of Italy, choose among beautiful villas to rent in Tuscany and enjoy your holiday
The name Maremma indicates the southern part of Tuscany: a vast geographical region between Tuscany and Lazio. The region has being promoted as a destination for agritourism thanks to the respect for the environment, for culture and for maintaining traditions. You will see medieval villages, fishing towns, art cities, tufa cities… and so much more! You can explore many different areas, each one with its own characteristics and attractions. There are many charming villas to rent in Tuscany: book yours and let the journey begin!
Starting from the top, Alta Maremma (Upper Maremma) is not far from Siena. You can see many picturesque hilltop villages, first of all Pitigliano, a delightful medieval town dramatically perched atop a tufa ridge. Pitigliano was inhabited since Etruscan times (7th-6th century BC), then there were the Romans, the Aldobrandeschi family (the first lords of the Maremma), the Orsini, Medici and the Lorraine families. The fascinating old town is known as the Little Jerusalem for the historical presence of a Jewish community.
The heart of Maremma, which is the area around Grosseto and the coast, with Marina di Grosseto, Castiglione della Pescaia and ancient small villages, is maybe the most famous part. Grosseto is the biggest city in Maremma area and you will enjoy a visit: it dates to the Early Middle Ages and it was transformed into a fortress under the Medici Family in 1574. If you walk along its ancient streets, you will literally pass through twelve centuries of history! Don’t miss the impressive fortified medicean walls, the beautiful Cathedral, in Romanesque style, the Church of San Francesco and its cloister, where it is possible to admire the impressive Crucifix by Duccio di Boninsegna, and the main square Piazza Dante.
If you want to spend a summer holiday, the coast of Maremma will amaze you with its alternation of sandy beaches, rocky coastlines and pine tree forests. Castiglione della Pescaia is the ideal place if you want to stay in a charming old town and enjoy the sea at the same time. It consists of a High City built on the hill and of a Low City at the foot of the High City. It boasts a stunning view of the islands of Elba and Giglio, and of the promontory of Argentario.
Also Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole are renown Tourist destinations: these two gems are in Monte Argentario, the famous green promontory surrounded by a high and rocky coastline. From Porto Santo Stefano, by ferry you can reach the splendid islands of Giannutri and Giglio, with their cobalt blue waters: here you can find unforgettable diving spots. Don’t miss the peninsula of Ansedonia, especially the lovely beach of Tagliata, where the iron dark sand contrasts the clear waters, and of Feniglia, close to a quiet pinewood forest. If unequipped beaches are not a must for you, and less crowded spots are… try the stretch between Marina di Grosseto and Castiglion della pescaia, enclosed by the pinewood forest and with unexpected sand dunes. But the best for you might be the beach of Cala Violina, accessible only by foot!
And if you get tired of the beaches (but you won’t…), you can have a great time also discovering naturalistic treasures such as lagoon and swamp ecosystems: for instance, the natural reserve of Diaccia Botrona.
For those who like sports... kitesurfing and windsurfing are waiting for you in the bay of the enchanting town of Talamone, and the varied Parco della Maremma is a great destination for trekking excursions. You can choose between walking tours, canoe tours, bicycle tours and even romantic night tours.
Are you a wine lover? Maremma allows you to taste exquisite wines: cheers to your holiday with a glass of the precious Morellino di Scansano… you can also discover the stylish winery Rocca di Frassinello in the village of Giuncarico (Grosseto province), realized by the archistar Renzo Piano. Last but not least… in Castiglione della Pescaia is located the Mortelle Winery, owned by the aristocrat Antinori family, the world-famous wine producers.
