In 1857, Lord Elphinstone founded the University of Madras by the Public Petition dated as 11-11-1839 formulated the establishment of the University. The University Board was constituted in January 1840 with Mr.George Norton as President. After a lapse of 14 years, in 1854, the Indian government designed a systematic educational policy for India and as a sequel on 5th September 1857; the University was established by an Act of Legislative Council of India. The University is regarded as the mother of all the old Universities of south India. University Grant Commission has granted a special status of ‘University with the potential of Excellence’ to the University of Madras. Only the University is authorized to announce the Madras University result on its official website, therefore, result declared from any other sources must not be considered.
