In accordance with
city ordinances, Spurlock said a business license can be revoked if information
is left off the application. Neither he nor Mayor Jim Lemon are aware of any
other licenses that have been revoked in the city.
"I felt like we were
deceived," Spurlock said, clarifying that Wholesale smoking accessories is not
illegal. "Whether it was intentional or not, I don't know."
Garnet
Christensen, one of the store's owners, said her merchandise is intended for
tobacco use, and she never intended to deceive anybody. She said her business
partner, Seth Dune, is new to filling out applications and had made an
inadvertent mistake.
"We're proud of our store," she said, adding that they
have nothing to hide. "We have oneofakind art pieces. (Having our license
revoked) was such a shock to me."
Christensen opened a similar store in Pasco
in 2004, which is now run by Dune. She said she's never had any problems with
the police, and she does not sell rose pipes glass tubes with tiny roses seen in
them because she knows they're often used for illegal purposes.Meanwhile, these
pipes are sold at local convenience stores, and Yakima has a couple stores
similar to hers, she said."It's just like Rite Aid selling razor blades," she
said about her merchandise. "It has no control of what people do with them when
they leave the store."Monday, the City Council will decide if the Glass Hook
should reopen after hearing from staff,Dune and Christensen. The general public
will not be allowed to speak, although Lemon said he has heard from several
people who don't want the store in their community."In my opinion, everyone in
the world knows you use (the pipes) for illegal drugs," he said.If the City
Council votes to keep her business closed, Christensen said she will appeal the
decision to the Washington State Supreme Court.
