Local Payment Methods Used in Europe

by MC P. Marketing

In an effort to reduce the European Union's trade barriers, more and more countries in this region are pursuing a "single digit" market. This includes decentralizing financial services which paves way for innovation with payments industries across the region.

APM’s and The European Countries That Use Them

  • Belgium - We all love our Bancontact cards. In fact, there are more of these plastic payment devices in circulation than Belgian citizens! Customers use a card or app linked to your bank account for online purchases that is guaranteed and confirmed immediately- how could you not want one?

When a customer makes an authorized payment, they will be redirected to the Bancontact website or mobile app where their transaction is immediately confirmed.

  • France - Cartes Bancaires is the leading payment card company in France with more than 1 million customers. They provide services to over 95% of their customer base by partnering on co-branding partnerships, which means you can use these cards anywhere that accept either Visa or Mastercard!

  • Germany - The most popular way to pay for purchases online in Germany is with SOFORT and Giropay. SOFORT by Klarna offers a banking service that enables you to make quick, secure transfers from your account regardless if it's located within Europe or not!

Giropay is an online payment system that allows customers in Germany to make payments using their bank accounts. Customers are first authenticated by providing a second factor, such as entering in the customer’s PIN or signature before withdrawing funds from them and sending it through giropay's infrastructure for processing.

  • Italy - Italy is a country where people love to shop. More than 80% of them transact in the digital world, and they prefer e-wallets or prepaid cards for their convenience!

  • The Netherlands - iDEAL is the most popular way to pay online in Netherlands with a share close to 55%. All major Dutch banks are members of Currence and operate this scheme, making it easy for customers who want an alternative payment method through their bank credentials.

  • Poland - They say that in Poland, up to 75% of the population rely on online banking and cash for delivery as their primary means to make purchases or receive funds.

  • Portugal - MultiBanco is the most popular payment method in Portugal, representing around 85% of total sales.

With the rise in online shopping, more and more people are using Multibanco as their payment method. With this card you get points that can be used to make purchases with an ATM or banking option - making it easier than ever before!

  • United Kingdom - The country of Great Britain has become an international leader when it comes to mobile shopping and debit cards. People in this area tend not only use 2-3 accounts, but also pay with them for online transactions which accounts for 90% of all UK consumer spending!
