Local Food and disadvantages
When we talk about local food, we refer to
products that are grown locally or in the region where we live. The idea to
stick to local food and avoiding imported fruit is not new, but something that
has been introduced and promoted decades ago. And yet, in the present time,
there are many people who stick to it. And the idea emerged for good reason:
the main ones being that buying local food supports the economic growth of the
nation, it improves the social health of a particular place, and are more
environmentally friendly. However, the local food movement also involves some
drawbacks, which probably, many are still unaware.
Disadvantages of local food
# One of the biggest disadvantage of buying local food is burning holes in your pocket. Local food, needless to say, is a matter dear. This can be understood from the standard of living of local farmers. Most of them do not have companies like retail stores food. In addition, most local farmers are family oriented, and so sell their goods at lower prices is certainly not a profitable business for them. And that is why local food, compared to what you can get from the grocery store is more expensive.
# another important factor that can discourage most people to be more likely to support local food is the convenience factor. It may be obvious to say that going to the grocery store in a local retail store is more convenient than sweating in the agricultural market. To add to this, you cannot check against all the food in your shopping list in the market. So probably you would have to buy animals from the market, and some groceries. And it is not said about how he would go to the farm of a farmer to buy what you want, if it does not come to the market.
# Stick to buying local food can help make the region socially and economically sound, but speak in global terms, it could have a reverse impact. For example, if we consider the poor countries they export mainly fruits and vegetables. So if the entire population in western avoids buying imported fruits such as banana or mango, or other vegetables, then it could affect these countries. Thus, one possible consequence of this can happen in the form of these countries to abandon the production of fruits and vegetables and to use more products like coffee, or beef. This in turn, would cause the price of healthy fruits and vegetables to skyrocket, and the price of less healthy foods to descend.
# there is no denial of the fact that locally, all varieties of food can be grown and supplied to consumers. Strawberries you get in the middle of winter or pumpkins you enjoy Easter are not grown locally, but are imported. This is because these foods cannot be grown in such seasons. So the bottom line is limited to local products, means compromising the variety of foods that otherwise you might have appreciated if you had supported the imported food. And this, in turn, forcing you to buy more local markets, paying much more than you would for imported items.
# And another concern, which is the area with the local food, is subject to regulatory or certification. Most farmers because small farms are not regulated so you can never be sure if what they call fruits and vegetables, are truly organic.
# Buy local food and disadvantages may be more appropriate for people living in colder climates such as Iceland. In these areas, if people come to support local agriculture, while they may not have a healthy life.
Points above the local food and disadvantages do not in any way mean to discourage you from buying food grown and produced locally. Given the fact that it helps to improve the economic stability of the region, the idea of local food cannot be overlooked. But at the same time, the fact that imported food to ensure that you get to eat your natural diet everywhere and at any time of the year cannot be denigrated. So the best thing to do is to buy local food when they are in season, and then for imported goods if the local food supply becomes scarce thus maintaining a balance.!
