Live Your Best Life With Supported Independent Living Options

by William S. I am a professional writer

For many of us experiencing disabilities, living independently is something that we want more than anything. However, living independently when you have a disability can be a challenge, especially if you need specialist care.

Fortunately, the good news is that the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIS) does offer options for those that want to live their best life independently. Such options are known as Supported Independent Living (SIL), a service you can find out more about in the post below.

What Is Supporting Independent Living?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a shared accommodation scheme offered by the NDIS to those with disabilities. Its purpose is to allow those of us with disabilities to live an independent life, while still making sure we get the support we need to stay healthy and safe.

Supported Independent Living is usually offered in a shared home, where a range of other people with disabilities will live. Depending on your needs you may have access to drop-in care, all the way through to 24-hour support.

What Are The Benefits Of Supported Independent Living?

There are a whole lot of benefits to choosing Supported Independent Living (SIL). Read about the most significant ones in the section below.

Greater Independence

Probably the most obvious one is that you can live your life as an adult away from and independent of your family. A choice that can help build confidence, provide greater autonomy over the way you live and offer you rich and varied life experiences.

Learn New Things

Living in supported independent accommodation is a great way to build up your skills and knowledge of practical tasks such as cooking, cleaning, shopping, and budgeting. While being supported in these tasks at the same time.

You’ll also learn to foster your interpersonal skills by building relationships with your housemates, and carers, who will also be there to support you if you need advice or guidance in these matters.

Access Help When Needed

Your health and safety are always taken care of when living in a SIL home. This is because homes are modified to ensure accessibility and safety, and you will always have the level of care you need on hand throughout the day and in an emergency.

Things To Be Aware Of When Choosing A Supported Independent Living Facility?

Before you can be accepted into a Supported Independent Living Home, you will need to talk to your NDIS planner. They will help guide you through the process and assess your needs to see if you are a good fit for these types of properties.

If it is decided that you would benefit from Supported Independent Living, then the next step will be to create a roster of the care you will need. This will help your provider estimate the amount of funding you will need, and will also make sure that your needs will be properly cared for should you move into a supported living home.

Once your provider has come up with a roster of care, you will need to approve it. It can then be sent to the NDIS for approval, which will trigger the funding you need to begin using SIL services and living your best life.
