Sometimes the best matches in tennis aren’t always about the best versus the second-best. What makes it best is when the opponents are equally paired. Take for example the insane, mind-boggling match between John Isner and Nicholas Mahut. What seemed like a normal five setter turned out to be one of the longest matches in Wimbledon history. Longest seems a little understated. This match, wait-for-it, lasted 3 days. Yes, 3! Sure the game was all about serve, hold, serve hold. But this match showed one thing, whether you are going for a backhand or a forehand or serving, having good control over your racket is important. Having a firm grip can go a long when when you are battling it out for some glory. But even if you are playing for recreational purposes, you need good grip. Having a proper grip can make all the difference. So if you are going to be investing in a good grip, here are some things that you can keep in mind to make the right choice.

Things to keep in mind before buying the right tennis grip

Before we get down to business, you need to consider factors such as what type of grip is needed and the durability and comfort level of the grip

Grips are available in two types - replacement grip and overgrip. Now, the replacement grip, as the name suggests, permanently replaces original grip when the original grip is worn out and hard to grip or slippery. The overgrip on the other hand, wraps over the top of the original grip and it is mainly used to protect the original grip. It is also used to increase sweat absorption factor and increase the handle size.

Replacement grips are more on the expensive side, but don’t let that deter you from investing in one. They will give you more control over the racket. Applying a replacement grip on the handle can be tricky, so its advised that you seek professional help while applying one. Go wrong and your playing style can be hampered. Now, overgrips are used mainly for improving tackiness, absorption and cushioning. Tackiness refers to the stickiness of the overgrip, a very tacky overgrip will ensure your hands are tightly gripped. Absorption refers to the ability to absorb moisture caused by perspiration. Perforations on the overgrip keep hands cool and dry. Cushioning helps in reducing the shock and vibration that comes with hitting the ball.

Now, we know that the basic function of the tennis grip is to keep your hands dry and firmly gripped over the handle. So make sure you choose grips that match the brand of your racket. For example a Wilson grip is ideal for a Wilson racket.
