Lehariya- The Dye Traditional Culture of Rajasthan

by Jeeten K. Digital Marketing Blog
In Rajasthan, India, there is a pure traditional concept of tie-dye called leheriya.  It comes in a variety of vibrant colours and interesting patterns. The term "Leher," which denotes "Wave," is where the name Lehariya actually derives its meaning. It is a method of tie-dying that produces diagonal stripes that seem as waves on the fabric.

Lehariya is not only a style of dress for women; it also perfectly sums up an entire period. It combines colours, draping techniques, and design. It not only reveals a woman's sense of style in clothing, but also her origins.  Additionally, the weave of it reveals the local climate. One such form is the Rajasthani Leheriya saree.

What do Lehariya Sarees look like?

Lehariya is a type of zig-zag pattern made up of distinctive and irregularly spaced coloured stripes, according to Mita Kapoor, one of the most well-known figures in the textile industry.  It is comparable to the shape of moving water.

Which method was used to make a Lehariya saree?

Stirpes are patterned on fabric in a diagonal pattern. The craftsmen of Rajasthan use a unique resist-dyeing technique to produce diagonal stripes. The fabric is rolled up lengthwise in a diagonal fashion and then tightly tied in this process. You will have created folds before dying, which appear as waves on the fabric.

Lehariya is made of light, delicate materials, with chiffon, fine silk, and thin cotton linen being the most popular choices. The fabric is rolled or wrapped around a wooden pole in a way that allows the colours to show through. The Lehariya Saree are then washed and coloured with natural colours. The Lehariya saris are washed with indigo or alizarin in the last step.

As a result, this is how the coarse new Lehariya Sarees are produced. Five and seven are regarded as holy numbers in Hindu culture. Two Lehariya saree patterns—"Pancranga" (five colours) and "Satranga" (seven colours), which are regarded as fortunate colours—are available.

Lehariya Festival: Rajasthan is known for its many festivities. There is excitement surrounding the Lehariya event every Savan month. Women in Rajasthan wear various variations of this lovely Lehariya. Women in Rajasthan are accustomed to celebrating this occasion by giving each other this seamless outfit, particularly during Teej.

The greatest clothing for the spring and summer seasons is made of Lehariya's bright and airy hues. A solid-colored suit can be worn with the vibrant cloth known as a Lehariya Dupatta. Although, for added brightness, it can also be dressed in an Indo-Western attire.

Like other materials like georgette, chiffon, or cotton fabric, Lehariya sarees are simple to maintain. However, colour bleeding is a problem that most women encounter. Keep it in a container of water with one teaspoon of salt overnight to solve this issue. It will aid in bringing the colour together.
