Perak Ladakh and Buddhist
Mask often leave the visitors bewitched by the amazing craftwork and
exceptional traditional layout. Perak referred as "Ladakhi bridal
gear" is a snake shaped leather headdresses enhanced with the
semi-precious stones worn by the Ladakhi women exemplifying the bridal culture
of Ladakh. It is presumed that after marriage, Perak Ladakh protects the lady from all evils.
The wealth and position of the
women are marked by the quality and
number of decorating stones over it. Moreover, they are the perfect option for the women for protection from
the cold. The girls of age over 5 to 6
years wear the small and simple Perak till they marry. After that, it is
traditionally gifted to her which becomes their most valuable asset which they
can wear up to old age. If in case, for women with no daughter, Perak mentioned
for her is either gifted to a monastery or transferred to close female
relatives.
Another tranquil artifact is Buddhist Mask that attracts you with
its dazzling beauty. It is a symbol of Gods, Demons and animals (such as dog,
elephant, snake, horse, lion, leopard, horse, monkey, deer, fox, hawk, rabbit,
tiger, wolf, yak, and monkey), fairies and ghouls.
Their menacing touch is believed to
chase the evil spirits away. To be safe from wicked spirits and keep them at
bay, raging masks are often worn that
belong to some deities. The more
frightening, more they possess the tendency to dismiss the evils around.
It is said God turns the five
negative feelings namely ignorance, attachment, rage, jealousy and pride
depicted by them through five small skulls into positive ones. Being sacred,
production of masks is dignified and strictly cohered to the size and
characteristics.
Normally, Buddhist Mask is bigger than human head by three times. Colors also
play a key role in exhibiting the role of masks like yellow (first color chosen
by Buddha for humbleness and refusal of materialism) for deep wisdom, good
fortune, and compassion for every virtue. Red honors the monk's dress and
sacred buildings and black shows hatred and darkness in demon's masks. These
three colors shades are used in the masks featuring Tibetan and Buddhist
culture.
