Learning The Secret Of Making The Finest Shoe

by Willie Riner Marketing Manager

You must’ve heard the saying, “No two shoes are the same!” It’s because making a shoe on a skiving sewing machine is an art.

Only the true cobblers will understand the meaning of the above phrase. If hand made leather shoes sound like a complicated business to you, believe me, it’s not!

It’s the style, pattern, fabric you decide for that shoe that gives it a unique feel and touch, along with a pinch of handcraft mastery!

Leather, hands down, is an expensive material, but if you plan carefully, you can keep your expenses down too.

Let’s Take A Look At Leather

What we do about leather is very little as compared to what we need to know. It’s flexible as well as durable. It’s as sturdy as it’s supple. And, it resists tearing and abrasion, for the credit goes to its elastic nature.

The reason why you can wear leather shoes for a number of hours and still not sweat because it's a breathable material and it helps insulate heat, to allow for steady and normal temperature.

Thus, leather is one of the most desired fabrics for a shoe, especially expensive Italian shoes. I don’t think any material comes even close to the comfortability factor of leather.

Now, let’s see the drawbacks of leather. It’s damn expensive compared to other shoes. It can get pretty hot after a while if you plan to run with it, also it turns out to be heavy, so say NO to your Polo game on Saturday!

I don’t know how many of you know this but leather is not resistant to water. At least some cheaper variants of leather can face extreme water damage.

As leather comes from animal hide, it’s very obvious that you might not find industrial grade quality every time you go searching for the best leather out there in the market.

Do Consider This...

When you purchase leather, you don’t purchase it by the yard, you purchase it by the square foot. So, that’s how you measure it!

Every square yard is approximately 9 square feet. Leather is available in the market as full hides, bends, and shoulders mostly, which are later cut in square areas of about 14 sq. ft.

You can also see leather to be available as a side (which is half a hide). A side is more than enough to make a single pair of shoes. .

The leather you wish to purchase should be fairly heavy deerskin and smooth. If you go for the less expensive variant known as ‘splits,’ you may get a sueded finish…

You not only invest money but your time and effort count as well while making a shoe. Why not do it the smart way! To add years of life to your shoe (investment), we suggest your stitching to be of optimum quality!
