Learning about T shirt Sublimation Printing

by Scrappy Apparel Best Custom T Shirt Printing Apparel Company

If we go by the bookish definition, the term “sublimation” refers to a process in which a substance changes its form from a solid state to a gaseous state directly without passing through the liquid phase. This process requires a very specific temperature and pressure. But what does it have to do with t-shirt printing and designing? Let’s discuss it in brief.

This sublimation technique can be used to print long-lasting and durable design patterns on t-shirts. The process involves printing on a special paper sheet and then the design is transferred on the fabric which is usually a mix of polyester and other materials. The ink is then heated and allowed to disintegrate to get a long-lasting design.

These were the basics, now let’s discuss some of the common misconceptions and queries about this process.

1.  Is heat transfer and sublimation the same?

There is a very thin difference between these two processes. In sublimation, only ink is transferred onto the fabric while in the heat transfer process, an additional layer is added over the fabric.

2.  Can this process be used on any type of material?

The material surface should be polymer-coated like in the case of mugs and mouse pads. However, you should use polyester material if you want to get the best results. You can also perform this process on some special sprayed glass.

3.  What are its limitations.

The first and foremost limitation of this process is the material choice is restricted to only two or three types of materials. Moreover, the color of the dying material should be light colored or white otherwise the results will not be very satisfying. You will need an additional digital printing screen layer if you want to use a dark color fabric.

4.  Can it be used to print white?

No, this process cannot be used to print white designs. However, you can use the white background of the t-shirt fabric to produce the white effect in your design. This is primarily because sublimation used MCYK printing which has no color combination that can produce white.

5.  Is it better than screen printing?

The answer to this question will depend majorly on two factors i.e., cost efficiency and longevity. If you are on a tight budget and don’t want to cross the mark, you can go for the screen printing method. It is a relatively cost-effective and fast procedure. On the other hand, if quality and durability of design are your priority, you must choose the Sublimation t-shirt printing technique.

Also, there can be cases where the desired material of choice is not suitable for the sublimation process, then also you can use this approach.

Every process has its positives and negatives, the best choice for you will depend on your requirements. If the material and color of your choice match the requirements, sublimation t-shirt design is the best printing method that can give you good quality designs.
