Learn About the Types of Fingerprints

by Whiteshark Media White Shark Media

There are many times in life where you need to be fingerprinted. Often, it involves the background check for a new job. In the state of Maryland, people wanting to legally purchase and own a gun must be fingerprinted before they are allowed to. If you plan to travel out of the country and need a passport for the first time, you'll be fingerprinted. Of course, if you are arrested you'll be fingerprinted when you're brought in. Not all fingerprinting is such a "big deal" though. If you sell a video game to a store that resells them, they will fingerprint you. Some communities use a fingerprint to give residents access to the pool rather than making them carry a key card. Banking apps and today's best smartphones give you access to your information with a fingerprint instead of a password or PIN. This makes fingerprinting in MD not only pretty interesting, but also very important to understand. Chances are good that you'll be fingerprinted at some point in your life, if you have not been already!

Why do companies and organizations turn to a fingerprint solution? In general, the purpose of collecting fingerprints is to identify an individual. This person may be applying for a job, wanting to volunteer around children, hoping to buy a gun, accused of a crime, selling something they verify isn't stolen, wanting access to somewhere secure, or a number of other instances when your identity needs to be confirmed. Regardless of why a person is being fingerprinted, here are three types of fingerprints that can be found:

#1 Latent

#2 Patent

#3 Plastic

The reason you are fingerprinted if you are suspected of a crime or wanting to prove you are safe enough to be trusted around children is due to latent fingerprints. Even if you don't realize it, you are leaving fingerprints everywhere! Latent fingerprints are made of the sweat and oil on the skin’s surface. This type of fingerprint is invisible to the naked eye and requires additional processing in order to be seen. This processing can include basic powder techniques or the use of chemicals. If you've committed a crime, you have left these latent fingerprints behind. Law enforcement has collected them and now it's time to run your patent fingerprints into the database to see if they match. Patent fingerprints, on the other hand, can be made by grease or ink, in a controlled setting. This type of fingerprint is easily visible to the human eye.

There's now a fourth kind of fingerprint, an electronic one. Many companies and organizations are doing away with patent fingerprints because they're so messy. They use electronic fingerprinting in MD, so the fingerprint is clean, clear, and easy to decipher. They will then send your fingerprints into several databases. One such database is with the FBI. If you have been arrested for a crime or your prints match unknown fingerprints found on a crime scene, the database will recognize this from your electronic fingerprint.
